Starting a small job to make a pair of floating shelves out of live edge Ash. Same material I used when
I made the slab counters because they are going in the same room. They'll be for behind the bar. 7-8" wide and about 60" long. I forgot to take a pic of the original slab which both shelves will come out of. It was 2 1/8" thick and I milled them down to 1 3/4" because of a curve and a slight twist.
Had to debark them. One side was already pretty well done and the other needed much more work.
The challenge part is drilling the holes correctly. I'm using Shepard Brackets for the floating support and they need holes drilled at 1' centers. They have a jig setup for drilling that is prespaced for you. They give you a single hole jig with each of their brackets you buy (per order) which means you have to be spot on with your alignment.
This is my 2nd order with them so now I have 2 of the jigs.
And this is the bracket setup I chose for this length of shelf.
Never did get around to taking pics of the drilled holes. But did that, cut the stop dado, sanded everything and put some grain filler on. That took about 5 hours and now I'll be ready for stain and clear next time I work on it.
