Hey guys. I live in Cortland county in NY and can not find any info regarding required licenses.

I know NY operates on a local level for license requirements, but all I can find is that I should have a DBA certificate (already do) and general liability insurance (pending).

I also checked on a few surrounding counties and came up with basically the same info.

Does anyone know if it is required for me as a sole proprietor to be state/county licensed, and if I travel out of my home base to work will it be required in the county?

When I lived on LI you needed to have a license in Nassau and Suffolk, even certain towns such as south hampton required licenses. I moved up to Saratoga/ warren county and you do not need a license. Most don't even have insurance. I pray everyday that they start requiring licenses up here, because some of the work is down right scary. Chances are you don't need a license call the county clerk to be certain.

Yup, as others have already said, you must check with every county or city you expect to work in. IFAIK nearest to you would be Syracuse that requires licenses for at least plumbing and electrical. Up here only the City of Watertown requires any licensing, then only for plumbing and heating.

And for what it's worth, I hope licensing never comes. Listen to the guys in the licensed areas complain how it's not enforced. Other than gov'ts. collecting fees, what good is it doing anybody?

That'll light the switchboard.

Good Luck
