how do you guys usually layout your beam pockets, usually the ones I work off of are pretty close to the size of the beam ( a little bigger than the beam), and I just shim the beam flush with steel shims. Any way, today I set couple 3 ply lvl's in some pockets and they were twice the width of the beam and some were 4" taller and lumpy as hell.

All I could come up with to remedy the situation was to shim, plate and lag the bottom, then continue my mudsill over top the beam.

So this got me curious, because I know there's alot of experience on here, tips, tricks? . I'm eager to see what you guys have come up with in the past

First off its masonry

I usually leave them about a 1/2-3/4 of an inch low, after installed shim to the correct height and use a non shrink grout.

If the sides are too big, once set and the bottom is grouted I put some blocking on the edges and pour concrete around the cast it solid.

And if it's a wood lvl wrap it with poly or some peel and stick
