Do you have questions regarding California Licensing?

I worked at the CSLB as an application technician for many years. I have a great deal of experience and would be happy to help.

Post your question and get a straight answer.

Hello License Guru, I have a few questions I'm hoping you can help with, I attached the part 2 experience portion of my application with personal info whited out to help clarify.

When submitting the work experience the "full time" box was checked rather than the "part time" box. I have 15 years working with my employer and half of that, 7.5 years, is journeyman level or higher of experience. The app was also returned because only the last 10 years of experience are accepted. Do you see any issues with changing the full time to part time and using half of the last 10 years to equal 5 years of experience? Should I include a separate letter explaining each of the changes?

The final question is about editing the existing app, should I be crossing out the old information and writing above like the reviewer started to do in blue or should I use white out as you recommended previously.

Thanks for any recommendations you can provide.

You could just change the beginning date, keep it as full time, and show 10 years total.

Drives me insane how the cslb techs are so picky over this minor crap. So you went passed 10 years, who cares. You're showing at least 10 years of experience! It's almost as if they go … ok not almost... go out of their way to make more work for themselves.

Changing it to part time might raise a flag.

You could type a more better experience outline on a separate page then cut it to size and make a copy of the page with the corrected outline taped to it. Then you and your certifier would initial it. Or, just white out tape and hand write over it.

I am thinking about applying for a General B license. I'm 24 and have 3 proven years of work ending 2 years ago with a general contractor that will sign off for that experience. I have also worked with my father in law that is license tile contractor for the past 6 years part time but under the table. Could he also sign for work experience?
Thank you

Hello Mkan0304,

My straight up advice.... wait a couple three more years before applying, at least.

Without the ability to show at least four years of journeyman level as an employee (pay roll/w-2 or 1099) you will have a very difficult time qualifying for the B classification.

Add in your age and they'll put you under the microscope and require a ton of documents, including permits, to prove your experience.

I think it already fell off the DMV record because it’s been so long. I now live 7 hours away from the county where it occurred, and they said it cost $130 to request the record by mail. I already went to my local police station and paid almost $50 to get the DOJ record, but it was not on there for some reason.

Gentlemen,

Regarding the disclosure form... if you don't know the case number, the exact date of the infractions, fines you paid.... no big deal. You can guesstimate on the date or just list the year.

Complete the details of the crime and your rehab efforts and you'll be fine. The point is just to submit the form, the reporting agencies will provide the cslb with all the specifics.

Include both even though it the one didn't appear on the DOJ report you got. Better to over divulge than under.

How to prepare for the Class B general contractor license exam in California?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone here can share your experience of preparing for the trade and law exams of the Class B general contractor license in California?

I have 4 years' journeyman experience and I have worked on painting, framing, wiring, plumbing rough-in and finish, and flooring in other states and in Canada. What is the best way for me to prepare for the exams? And is it necessary to get enrolled in a class?

Any share of experience, books or classes will be appreciated!

Hello xieaaron,

That's good that you have the minimum experience... the question is... was it obtained as an employee of a contractor who holds the B or similar out of state/country license?

The cslb prefers that B experience is submitted as an employee. If it's submitted as self-employed, they'll ask for permits and have you fill out a bunch of project list forms to prove your experience.

I offer an excellent study prep kit. Click on my guru guy to the left for my website.

Thanks, as always, Griz!

Hi License Guru,

This is probably a complete noob question, but the former employer of my partner who we wanted to get a roofing license for is refusing to sign the QE-Verification and I can't seem to find anything that says that it could be done without it.
Is there a way to do this just by supporting documents like pay stubs, tax returns ect., or are we in full dependency here?

Also, if we are applying for two licenses at the same time, but one with examination waiver and one without, does one impact the application time of the other?

Thank You in advance for your help!

Thomas

Hello noob... I mean Thomas.. lol Welcome to CT!

Anyone with first hand knowledge can be a certifier on the work experience form. Fellow employee, supervisor, fellow journeyman.

You can have only one application in the system at a time. If you put two classifications on one app where one requires a test, they will reject the application and have you remove one of them. Then apply for the second class after the license has been issued.

Hi License Guru,

I applied for the D-34 License a few weeks ago and today I received the application fee number and PIN number, my question is, am I approved? Or will there be additional screenings?

I was listed on my father's application a few years ago, so I have already gone through the finger printing process. My father's application was approved, but he was unable to pass his exam due to a language barrier.

Now that I am a bit older (23), I have decided to apply for the D-34 license myself. I have a 4 year degree in Economics and have been working part time with a GC (who signed my work experience certification) since I was 18. I was doing job walks, estimating, and would work in the field on all projects that included playground or fitness equipment.

I am still a bit worried that due to my young age I will be rejected, although I have back-up for all work performed via payroll checks.

I REALLY wish all goes well, as I have GCs and playground vendors willing to give me work, but it is all dependent on the license.

Hello Gonzo,

Use the app number and pin to view the apps progress on the cslb website. Click here. Click on Application Status (Secured)

At 23 they may determine that you're a "young journeyman" and may ask you to prove your experience with those payroll documents.

Other issues could be... did you submit your experience as part time or full time? Did your experience outline include job walks and estimating? If so, that's pretty much an automatic rejection for corrections.

Hi Andy,

Initially all you would have to show is at least four years of full time C36 experience on the application.

The trick is... if you already have a license, you can't show the experience as full time under that license. It has to be shown as part time. For example, if you've been licensed for eight years, you could submit eight years of part time experience that will equal the four year full time requirement.

If everything checks out, the app should go into the que for processing. The license would be issued after they've received all necessary docs. i.e. bond, workers comp cert or exemption, etc. Issuance is about 10 days after they've received those items.
