Bad Composite Deck

I was up to Bretton Woods, NH this weekend at my uncles condo he bought several years ago. I couldn't believe the shape of the composite deck. Many of the boards were split on the ends from the screws, the railing was bowing and many of the 4x4's on the railing were leaned out and some were cracked at the base where it meets the deck. Some were broken off entirely and an angled brace has been installed for now. I thought this stuff was built to last? The 4x4's are the solid type. Some of the caps were faded, seemed to be less UV inhibitor. I busted my phone friday so I couldn't take any pictures. Is this the result of some poor manufacturing years ago or is this happening to a lot of the older decks. I'm pretty sure this is any more then 10 years old. I guess they've started replacing some of the decks with wood. What's the life expectancy supposed to be?

Sounds like the first generation Trex with those solid posts. The product was a failure and most have improved technology.

I still think the jurys out until we see what the next 10 yrs do. They absorb an enormous amount of heat.

There have been problems with many of the earlier "composite" decks. That's why I like the newer PVC coated stuff like the TAMKO Evergrain. Still, while the PVC coating doesn't guarantee against future problems, it at least adds some protection.

The thing is, almost everything will fail when exposed to the elements, UV rays etc. It's just the degree of failure and how long it takes.
