I got an ICC catalog a couple weeks ago and I’m a bit confused.
  • Is it cloud-based or is loaded to my laptop?
  • Do you only have access to it for a year? This could get really expensive really fast. We work in dozens of different jurisdictions, all are at different adoptions. I think we have one jurisdiction that is still using 2012… one or two still using 2015… and most using 2018. I’d have to subscribe to all three (plus 2021eventually) every year!
  • Is the search function good?
  • NEC is not offered in Online Subscription?

I buy title 24 every three years in hard copy. I'm old like that though.

No matter what you do it can get pricey - yes it is an annual fee & cloud based (not 100% sure you can download PDF's)
NEC is a different organization of the ICC thus it is not the IEC
I have / buy the code books on pdf which I can search that way

We just have too many jurisdictions using too many different versions. I would need to maintain at least 3 versions (in the future) at $78 per version per year. That’s $234 a year. If I buy the hard copy, it only costs $114 (soft cover) every 3 years.

It also seems like they could have done a better job of describing what you get for each option they offer. What is a “PDF/REDLINE DOWNLOAD”? I can’t find a description in the catalog or the website.

PDF is standard codebook with a secondary PDF one that shows changes made - I would say based off what you said, consider the soft cover with PDF download option. Nice to feel paper but for quickly searching it nothing beats PDF. If you really want to know why they made a change or thinking behind it - commentary set

I called them once on the phone and asked about getting permission to copy and paste language directly from the code and they said as long as I didn’t take more than five contiguous pages at a time it was allowed under creative Commons license.

I use to be a member of ICC when I was going for my building inspector's licensee in 2002 and carried the membership until 2006 is the last year I got the codebook from them, now I usually download a free PDF copy from the internet, they always have the latest versions for NJ or International in PDF formats floating around.
If you want to use the code just for quick reference you can also look it up online: General Building Codes (y)
find the code for your state and you can copy and paste all you want, but I like to keep a PDF copy on a hard drive this way I can access it if I cant get access to the internet.
