If someone's a convicted sexual offender, they have to register where they live. A lot of people won't rent to sexual offenders.
If someone asked me if they could crash at my place until back on their feet, after saying "no", I'd look at the online sex offender registry (one in every state) to see if they are listed. But this won't do any good if the person is an illegal because of their use of many different identities, you have no idea who you're talking to.
If you do that search and there's a bunch at the same address, it's probably a halfway house or homeless shelter.
