I went by Woodcraft the other day and was wondering, is this the best store to buy woodworking tools and wood from?
For me yes. They have some of the most expert staff i have ever meet. these guys still produce master pieces out of work hours but in the store you got guys who know everything about any project your gonna do.

Im sure its different from store to store but i couldn't ask for a better place to buy kit from to be honest.

I live in a land of such abundance that Woodcraft could not compete and closed up shop. Their prices were just too high for the common stuff. I would never buy wood there. Only used them if I needed something right away and no one else had it.

Not wood. As far as tools and equipment, they are not a bad place.

My local one went out of business, which was not a huge loss as I ordered most of my Festool's from Bob Marino, because they did not stock much and it took weeks to get a tool when Festool HQ is only a two hour drive.

Here in Greenville, I don't go to Woodcraft, but we have other options. We have a local tool shop called the Tool Shed that has everything you can imagine, every brand(except junk, of course), and every vendor to order from if they don't happen to stock what you need. The staff is top-notch in service and knowledge and they have a great selection of Festool in stock. The owner even says that he himself "lives, eats, and :censored: tools," so lets just say they have all the latest and best stuff.

As far as wood we also have some pretty neat lumber yards still around that you may not find but a pallet or two of plywood in, but they have a :censored:load of solid woods, specialty trims, etc. Woodcraft is SOOO high on their wood that it borders criminal, at least in Greenville.

Woodcraft have numerous sales on their material through out the year. Whats nice is they give you a card they stamp witch every $10 of material and when you fill the card you get cash off and then you get cash back on every purchase through their cash back account and with the 20% of coupons and sales you can get the stuff really cheap.

Get most of my tools from Coastal Tool. Woodcraft has some nicer stuff, hell for the prices you pay for some of it I'd only use it as displays.

But for smaller stuff, router bits and such it is convenient.

WoodCraft in Ft. Myers Closed. I loved going their and messing around and talking with their staff. I bought a few chisels some demo equipment. I was sad to see them have to leave. I would get referrals for stairs and high end jobs from their Ft. Myers Location. It was the economy that killed them most of their client base is older retired hobby guys. It sucks because their staff was great including the owner. Their not a real commercial destination for supplies

For me, the nearest store is a five hour drive. We've no stores for tools other than what the hardware chain store is stocking, and a Lowe's an hour away.

So for me it's all online, and I like Lee Valley and Highland Hardware.

The Woodcraft by me is awesome. The staff is fairly knowledgable, but you do get the occasional guy that wishes he knew and pretends he does; so be careful you're not dealing w/ that guy. The owner of the one by me and I know each other by name; they're good people.

As far as buying hardwood from them, the place I used to get all my hardwood from went belly up, so I buy from Woodcraft now. I beat them up on there prices though. It's not a great deal, but it's competitive and they're very accomodating. Plus, since I'm there so much they don't try to play games anymore, just give me their best price. As far as buying hardwood goes, Woodcraft gets the larger lots from local mills. So you may be able to get it cheaper mill direct if you know where they're getting it. By larger lots, I mean if you needed 50 or more BF. I know where my Woodcraft gets their hardwood, and I can't get it any cheaper from that mill if I drove there myself (I'm sure they give Woodcraft a much better discount than I get); plus Woodcraft is about 40 miles closer so getting it there only makes sense.

I don't buy my ply there, it's too expensive. Also, just like any other business I'm sure location means a lot. Just use some common sense.

In short, yes I think it's a good store

I only buy my FESTOOL equipment there Chris. An occasional router bit or specialty item. Never any wood though.
i bought my table saw there. it was a display they didnt want cause it took up too much room. Mike knew i was eyeballing it so he offered it to me before he put out a sign. got a nice deal on it
i but a lot of tools and router bits there. bought a bunch of cabinet door sets during the freud demo day.
i get most of my hard wood from delaware county supply in chester and all my plywood from russell plywood..

Never dealt with Russell Plywood. Can you PM me some contact info?

Woodcraft is a bit far for me, Rocklers closer and a bit cheaper. But the 2 are kind of like Lowes and Homedepot as to what they carry. If I can wait for a tool I usually order it online, usually get a better price plus theres better choices then what I can get in my state do to inventory tax's.
As far as wood, I never buy from either of them, just to expensive. I have other much better options here, a couple of good small lumber yards as well as an exotic wood dealer, plus I know a few guy's in woodworking that I can get some select stuff from.

I've bought my jet table saw from them as well as entirely too many festool tools.

Their wood is really high priced so I purchase that elsewhere. But for tools, pricing is comparable to what I can get elsewhere and they have a lot of knowledge.
