I don't know if anyone here deals with Wood-Mode Cabinet company because unexpectantly after 77 years they close the doors.

Here is the article I got today in the email

KREAMER, PA — The abrupt, unexpected closure of Wood-Mode is sending reverberations through the kitchen and bath industry, its ripple effect impacting dealers, designers, consumers, sales reps and others on virtually all levels of the industry’s supply chain.

This week’s sudden closure of the iconic, 77-year-old custom-cabinet manufacturer dealt a blow to approximately 1,000 laid-off workers and created a shroud of sadness, chaos and uncertainty among community officials and the company’s extensive network of dealers, many of whom have multiple projects in the manufacturing pipeline.

Cabinet orders in various stages of production have been left, at least temporarily, in a state of limbo. Suppliers are reportedly coping with unpaid invoices. Consumers left in the lurch are wondering about the uncertain status of their projects. Hundreds of dealers in the U.S., Canada and South America, many of whom have had long-term, exclusive relationships with Wood-Mode, were left pondering the fate of their own businesses...

That bites.

Bill Esler, a senior editor with Woodworking Network, said Wood-Mode’s closure is rare but not unprecedented. Esler said imports unsettled the domestic cabinetry market as a whole, especially competitors from China, offering it as one potential circumstance negatively impacting Wood-Mode.

“There is a trade case to limit such imports, but they have already eroded the market significantly. Though Wood-Mode aimed at a higher end of the market, overall … pricing erosion can affect all segments,” Esler said.

Karl Forth, a writer for FDMC and Woodworking Network, cited three cabinet and furniture company closures in the past year, all outside Pennsylvania.

I have installed quite a few jobs using their cabinetry for a GC who has been using us as their sub for install work as well as other aspects of the jobs.

This is a really sucky thing for a whole lot of people... 20+ years ago when my friend who is one of the PM's for this company was hired, the first thing they did was send him to PA for a week of training with Wood-Mode.

They have a fantastic finish, life time warranty, and from the short time I've worked with and around the product I really enjoyed it.

Outside of the obvious employee's of the company who this is devastating to, dealers like the company we work for have a showroom with thousands of dollars of cabinetry (wouldn't surprise me if it was at least 100k), including a full working kitchen for catering events. What do you do with all that now?

Hopefully somebody will buy the company and make some changes and such and get things running in a good direction again. In the mean time this really sucks for a lot of folks.

Doubtful on the class action lawsuit, when Rutt went under in the late 90s the suits were dismissed. That was a similar situation except for the fact their delivery trucks were stopped on the road and the drivers were fired on the spot and had to find a way home. The new drivers drove all the delivery trucks to a warehouse where they were parked. People were furious

Deposits were lost, vendors got sued and went under, a real mess.
Viking bought the factory and inventory and went back and tried to sell the cabinets to the people who ordered them but would not honor their previous deposits since they bought the assets from the bankruptcy court.

The suits were dismissed as far as I know, but due to the bad press Viking only honored a percentage of the deposits on cabinets that were to be delivered and were already on the trucks. The others finished but not on the trucks were sold to other people, ones in production were destroyed.

That will definitely leave a void in the market place. Another very long running supplier of building components that closed their doors awhile back was Zeluck windows from NY.N.Y.,most have not heard of them 'cause they were the primo of the primo.
