I came across Bass' old "table saw millwork" thread with this picture.

It got me wondering about something I've never given a thought to before. Why the "relief cuts" on the backside of mouldings?

Please learn me up on this one. Thanks.

Because trim is mostly covering imperfect
joints between dis-similar materials,
that usually are not in perfect plane. :thumbsup:
