I came across Bass' old "table saw millwork" thread with this picture.

It got me wondering about something I've never given a thought to before. Why the "relief cuts" on the backside of mouldings?

Please learn me up on this one. Thanks.

Allows for the use of sealants and reduces cupping are two reasons I can think of.
