I do maintenance in a restaurant and 1 single basin sink has a deep cup strainer that needs to be replaced --- gasket gone.

The tail pipe just drains into a floor drain so there's no consideration for the strainer to match up.

Why install one or the other --- deep cup with lock not under the bell or a conventional stainer like on a resi sink ?

This is a typical commercial drain release.

Keeps folks from having to reach in to hot water etc.

The counter man at the supply house said one was more/less likely to move around...can't remember exactly...

So what are the apps for them..

for commercial i vote for the one with the large handle

for residential i ALWAYS use the deep cup with the small not....the large nut version on right right is a POS...it never seems to work right....every time i get a service call for strainer issues its always one of those with the large nut...they loosen up or never get tight....the cup version always gets nice and tight

my favorite is the Kohler strainer...they are cast and use 3 screws to tighten...they are awesome....thats why i use on my own home
