Hey everyone,

I’ve been working in the as-built surveying and drafting industry for several years, but recently, I decided to start my own business and work independently. I provide as-built surveys, drawings, 3D models, and construction documentation for residential and commercial properties. My services include interior surveys, detailed plans, sections, elevations, and new layouts.

I’m based in New York, but I can take on projects in any city. I’m now looking to expand my client base—if you have experience in this field, where do you think is the best place to find clients? Are there specific platforms, forums, or industry networks where architects, contractors, or property owners look for these services?

Also, if you or someone you know needs this type of work done, feel free to reach out!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You might go to the various county permit offices and ask where the book of permits are located for you to look through. The permit copies on display will have the contact person as well as contact information plus whoever might show up as the general contractor for the job. They may be one in the same....it's up to the how that county wants their records for the permit. There should be a value range for work to be completed so you'll have an idea that the GC is really a GC for serious work. In most offices the books are kept current each week for everyone that wants the same information in order to market services and materials.

That's how I built up a list many years ago of active General Contractors and any subs that were posted in different phases of work.

Thanks, Dan! I really appreciate the insight and the practical advice. That’s a great approach to building a solid contact list. I’ll definitely check out the county permit offices. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Not a problem. It's not a panacea...but it's a solid start on leads. IF someone has taken out the permit....you're probably not in time to take are of the as-built job given that most permit packages have always required completed documents at the time of taking the permit for review. However...it's always the next time where they've got your number.

I hate the additional work involved...but a good Customer Relationship Module is a great tool to have. I once had a 5000 contact list using ACT CRM for a small orchestra that I took under my wing to hunt down and make contact information available to an account for each contact lead. The hunt is the hard part; however....once you've got it, you have someone to send a bulk emailing each month to make sure no one forgets your name and ability.
