3 or 4 times a week my computer communes with Microsoft for hours downloading updates, restarting, and all kinds of craziness. What's the deal all of a sudden? I have a mental picture in my head of thousands of software engineers writing useless updates so they don't get laid off.

Yo Microsoft, stop abusing my PC, it's an Acer. She can't handle this stuff.

It wouldn't be so bad if I got some gee whiz features after hours of dealing with a slowed down PC, but it all looks the same.

Actually this IE8 is kind of cool, but stop the madness Microsoft!

Anybody else having these problems? I like the Microsoft software, it's easy to use, but it sure is inconvenient at times. Like driving your car to the grocery store and all of a sudden it takes over and drives itself to the dealer for an oil change or something.

I have MS office live for my business web site, they are going thru some serious changes, I can't do any updates or check the site reports at all for the past week or so.

I hope they get it sorted out soon, it is getting old:mad:

Either one of these, take your pick:

1. Microsoft Pop-Up Ads & Marketing tricks (for third-party sellers); :whistling

2. Adware/Malware, or third-party sellers using your web/mail server cookies (visited & stored at their sites earlier); :whistling

3. Virus, Worm, Trojans, or Spyware alraedy hidden in your PCs .. now suddenly starting to downloading your hidden stufs (i.e., like gay porns, etc..) back into their mothership for further investigation (FBI) ...just kidding..:whistling

It all worked fine before the update, I don't see any changes. What the deal is?:wallbash:

Now don't anyone make fun of my Acer either. Yes the build quaility is... appalling. Yes the paint peels faster than a late 80's Taurus. Yes the jacks are held together with hopes and dreams. The damn thing works though. It's like a crappy Asian car that just keeps running.

This is on my wishlist from Staples:

http://www.staples.com/HP-Pavilion-Elite-e9160f-Desktop-PC/product_802764

Haven't upgraded yet because all my design software is licensed to this computer. To install it on another computer I have to buy new licenses for all my stuff. So add $600 to the price of that PC plus whatever Office Pro costs these days.

Upgrading PC's is expensive.:censored:

Another thing that annoys me is that Microsoft Live Update virus software. I set it to run at 0400 but it sort of starts running whenever it feels like it. Lost 2 designs because my Acer can't run Live Update and PRO Landscape at the same time.

I was going to say the same thing. I really hate automatic anything. I have my auto update shut off. I'll update it when it is convenient for me, not them.

As far as updates all I've seen is Windows Security Updates if they are for Defender it's wasting my time as I have it disabled.

As far as your brand of computer they are the company who makes the Red Ferrari Lap Top one model is $7,000 your's might not be "all that" but it keeps better company than my HP.

As far as buying a box computer..DON'T!

BUILD YOUR OWN. More bang for your buck!

Totally agree on the self build. I've built my own beige (now black) boxes since '95.

It's not as cost efficient as it used to be though.

Anyway Bob, you, as said, need to turn the Automatic Updates to "download the updates but let me choose when to install them." or "notify me but don't automatically download or install them."

How to get that? RIGHT click on My Computer, select Properties, then the Automatic Updates tab. Choose your selection with the radio button. (Uh, the little dot in the hole.)

You sure your license isn't transferable to a new PC or lappy? Most are allowed to be run on one machine. You should be able to uninstall it and reinstall it on the new one if you bought a retail or pro copy of your programs.

Oh, Windows 7 comes out October 22nd. You can't upgrade XP to it. Clean install or preload only. Also, there's going to be compatibility issues on SOME older progys. Check first.....

I've been beta testing the RC for awhile, it's not bad. I still run XP on my work PC though. Wanted to wait through Vista.... MS releases a decent OS every other issue it seems. (95/98 good, Millenium/2000 not so good, XP good, Vista not so good...Windows 7 seems good.)

Yeah flippin right. You want the guy that can't assemble Ikea furniture to build his own computer? You want the guy that doesn't know a GB from a Pop Tart to build his own computer?

:laughing::laughing:

That is one of the funniest things I have ever read on CT!:laughing:

Build my own comuter!:laughing::laughing:

No thanks. That one at Staples got good reviews and has big numbers as far as processor and whatchits go. It's probably not a raging pile of ****.

First of all Apple suck. They ain't gonna see a penny of my money. Can by a lot better performance machine for half the money.

Also bob you should be able to transfer the license from one pc to another.

Also most of the updates you are downloading or just security updates. Might be a good idea to change to an anti virus like avast home edition.

Here is my take on it. They are fecking it up so that firefox is now just as reliable as their lackluster < read POFS browser IE. I am REALLY starting to get pissed  AND I have nearly 30 gigs of freakin Operating System!!!!! Seriously! I partitioned off half the drive to separate all my programs and photoshop & pics from the OS and now the OS is so damn full it freaks out when I try to watch youtube or have a few windows open :censored: :censored: :censored:

Oh and I turned off that draconian update also!!!

what is your operating system modern? Tandy.. that is a blast from the past. My great uncle (lives in Utah) was one of the gurus WAY back in the day and used to build them in his garage like Paul Allen and Bill Gates. Tandy was his choice back in the day when PC's really were taking off. My mom and grandma both had Tandy's.
