Putting in a new toilet in my master bath and I am amaized at how many choices are out there. I'm looking at going with an American standard Champion 4. Is that a good way to go? Is the 250$ worth it? I see that some toilets can get to be 1000 and up. I figured 150-200 would buy a decent toilet but the Champion 4 has a 4" flush valve and a 2 3/8 trap. How are those pressure assist ones are they worth the extra $???

most plumbers seem to like toto.
i've installed four of the champion 4 toilets in moderate traffic bathrooms and they've been going strong for about two years now. no maintenance other than to re-tighten the toilet seat every year or so. they've been through the equivalent of several years of home use already and i've never had to plunge one.
they flush clean, are easy to install, are economical and have been maintenance free. i couldn't be happier.
i also installed a cadet 3 and that hasn't been quite as good. no plunging necessary so far, but it doesn't flush as cleanly (probably because it uses .3 gallons less).

Toto makes a good toilet but my customers usually go for the Kohler. People just like the way they look better. A number of years ago Toto did heavy advertising and there was a rush of installs. Toto had really bad style back then and IMO they still do.

Toilets are more about style and looks these days because manufacturers have redesigned them and they all make an excellent product that flushes very well. This is also where Toto lost it's edge. Back when Toto was all the rage people were willing to pay extra for a great flushing toilet even though it was ugly as all get out. Nowadays Toto is experiencing big problems in the marketplace because once Kohler realized they were losing market share to Toto, Kohler redesigned them. Now Kohler not only has great looking toilet that flush well but have a strong brand behind it with extensive distribution channels.

A Kohler, a Toto, and a Gerber............all lined up and equally tested next to one another flush the same amount of crap down.

You just have to decide which one looks best in your house.

Gerber Ultra Flush, with the Sloan pressure assist bladder. Haven't found a toilet I like better and that includes other brands (Eljer) that also use the Sloan bladder. It's all about the trapway as well.
Currently 3 bowl choices, standard round, standard elongated, and ADA height elongated.

....yes I think the pressure assist are worth the extra money.....if it's a Gerber. I'm paying less than $300 including the seat, seal, and I always like to replace the stop valves and feed lines at the same time.

I've got a toto dual flush that is ADA height. We really like the toilet but it uses so little water that it requires extra cleaning to get the skid marks off. Not every time, just more than you're used to. About those pressure assist toilets? What if you're on well water or lose water pressure or electricity. You can't fill the tank up by hand and then flush like a regular toilet can you?

Minimum water pressure for the Sloan Flushmate 1.6 gpf is 20 psi and for the 1.0 gpf is 25 psi. To note I have yet to try the dual flush version where you have a choice between 1.0 and 1.6 gpf.
If you did lose electricity/well water pressure your only option would be the direct gravity flush method......dumping a half full 5 gal bucket directly into the bowl
The flushmate system works by compressing air as it refills with water. Another bonus to these is there is no water in the tank itself, so no condensation from hot showers.

For the money, gerber avalanche (watch the youtube demo where they flush 300 marbles). I won't use any american standard products because they are hard to service and fail often. Kohler has the most overrated toilet on the market, the one piece versions all have crooked casting and the new bracket system is terrible unless you want a wobbly tank. The overall flushing of a kohler is about as good as a 50 dollar generic toilet. Toto is also a great toilet, but some of their dual flush models require 12 1/2" inches from finished wall so if you have a 10" or 12" rough measurement it won't work. Their standard models are excellent though.

I used to install a lot of American Standard, till about 7-8 years ago! Got tired of call backs and even more tired of returning stuff cause the quality was so bad. The last straw for me was waiting 6 weeks for a drop in lav and when it finally showed up their was a dime sized spot on the edge that had no glaze! I called the AS sales rep who was across the street at my wholesalers. He couldn't even bother to stop in, or call, or do anything.

Since then, the majority of my installs are toto. I have installed countless ultimate toilets and only ever had one problem, a tank lid that was warped. Wasn't a huge deal but I phoned the toto rep anyway and he sent me a new toilet!

I like Toto, seems almost all houses now are getting either Toto's or Caroma dual flush toilets. The trouble I have with the dual flush low-flow is that when you pinch a massive Monday morning monster it will often break the regular water level and smear the walls of the bowl something fierce. Then you have to flush multiple times to get the skid marks off the side of the bowl.

A house I am currently working on has 6 of these Gerberit hidden tank toilets and they are probably the nicest toilet I've seen to date.

I put the #210 (3gpf) lift flush valve on my Mansfield's & now they are one of the best flushing toilets I've seen (& without any splash). Unfortunately, Mansfield has gotten real hard to find in Texas.
I love to modify cheap toilets to make them more efficient. My latest favorite is HD's Glacier Bay $99 toilet with the oversize flapper valve. I extend the overflow tube ( with a weld tube & an o-ring) & install a Korky fill valve & now it uses over two gpf instead of 1.28 gpf. Makes a nice toilet with less than $15 in new parts. Even cheap toilets have a 2 in. fully glazed trapway these days. Must be a government thing.
