I would have trimmed first myself nice look though.

 

Up until recently, I always used a tile setter. Sometimes, his schedule would be ahead of my trimming. So, I held the trim in place and drew a line to which he would tile up to. I would install trim after.
I prefer to install trim first though.

I am assuming that that joists were capable of maintaining the load with 2" removed?

 

And actually, I'll only do an 1 1/2" next time
Had to install another 1/2" plywood on top of the new 3/4" I put down

I mean this respectfully, but how can you cut a floor joist like that without giving it a lot of thought and careful consideration?

There are a lot of things to consider and contemplate before the saw touched the lumber.

I thought only plumbers did stuff like that. lol

And I just didn't think 2" was a huge deal
You look at some of the homes done in the 1950's with all the joists notched to lay a mortar bed. Not saying that is correct either. Just that they would put 2 ton of weight on those joists too

For barrier free I use the Tuff Form by ARC. I've used them three times now. A great product with no guess work. You simply remove the 3/4" subfloor, bridge between the joists on the edges of the pan and around the drain.

No worry about structure.

I just met with the guys from ARC. They have a ton of new literature and a few new products to check out.

 

This is a Noble drain. Same type of install.

The discharge is off center on the Noble also.

Yea I've been impressed. I was also approached by a distributor of Luxe Elements. He claimed that schluter pays the patent for their products which I thought was interesting.

Haven't been able to find out if this claim was true though.

But the damn drain locations are always off-centered

 

That's if one way the drain hits a joist, it won't if you flip it.

 

I sat through an ARC presentation last month it was the most pathetic presentation I have ever witnessed. The fact that they can make a good waterproof shower is a testament to the Mapei waterproofing system that they use. The pan is something that will be copied as soon as they get a little larger in the US.

Looks like AWC has some tables on joists and rafters
Not understanding them yet
Always here the answer of staying in deflection limits when doing tile
But never an answer on how to get that number

It looked like a pretty straight forward install
Do you flash Kerdi up walls or just use the hydroban?
And is it necessary to keep it 3" from end of wall and float with mapei?

 

The system comes with Liquid waterproofing and fabric that covers the entire system. As far as keeping it off the wall 3" - it depends on the install. If the shower footprint is less than 5'x4' in size, it makes for an easier install when lowering the shower floor 3/4".

 

Not a bad system but the ARC Tuff Form is a lot easier to install.

 

I did the level entry one last time. It's was a bit cheaper. But it was too much work. I won't settle for it next time. Lol. Dad was having trouble finding the Tuff Form and found VIM locally. But all that blocking is too much work and time is money.

Using ARC next time for sure.
