All the subfloors in our home are OSB, tile with heat in all the bathrooms. OSB with Ditra.

I didn't say it wouldn't work. I just wouldn't install it.

OSB is prone to edge swelling.

If it does get wet it can and will expand. I've seen plywood soaked around a toilet and once it dried out it was fine. Never happen with OSB. It will swell and fall apart.

It's also just a personal preference. I don't like working with it. And even though I know it has the same strength as plywood it just doesn't feel solid.

 

It's also not a recommended substrate by the TCNA. It references ANSI A108-1999.

Our home is OSB, when I framed Advatech was not on the market yet. If I framed an addition today I'd use Advantech probably 1" thick.

Both are T&G.

Same 3/4ply and advantech about same price but I use advantech just because of how much more solid it feels over plywood when screwed and glued. Plus dal cim500 sticks to it way better too.

 

This was before this happened...I was all finished.

And here is where the fracture started.

Interesting, so was the glass just bedded in a silicone bead?
Around here it is embedded in the tile set (total pain in the anus), I like this way better except for it shattering.
Nice looking shower.

 

It was clamped and then all voids were siliconed.

I couldn't imagine embedding in the tile set.

 

Rob, I thought you were saying that you thought the glass would need to be set in track around the seat area?
Is the new glass?

Or, did I completely misunderstand ?

Also, did you use a leveling system the the walls? If so, which one?

I Demolished this little gem the last couple of days. It was a Homeowner/Handyman special built in 2008.

First off the pan was REINFORCED CONCRETE and 3 Inches thick at the Drain, 7 Inches at the thickest point.

He Installed a CPE liner all the way 10 feet and up the liner on the wall first, the a wall/floor splice then the floor liner. The liner was glued to 1/2" Plywood and had 1/2" CBU Screwed over the top of it. Bonuse the liner was over the weep holes.

The amount of overkill with PL and Silicone was useless because it was in all the wrong places.

My favorite was all the blocking he added.

 

Wow! Guess that's a jump-in shower....

 

He had a Tub Spout at about 26 inches. Walls were 34. The overall dimension were 83x60x26 (minus the bench and clipped front) that adds up to about 500 Gallons

 

So... did it leak?

Not sure if you're complaining because it was a piece of crap, or because it was a total PITA to demo. :laughing:

 

Yes it leaked. In more spots then I could count. The major leak was from the Waste Line PVC that was never glued.

PITA to demo, worst demo I had that i can remember.

4 dots, and very soupy grout to fill in for edge support. At least it was an easy demo. 8x8 ceramic on concrete slab.

 

Surprised in didn't crack as soon as someone stepped on it.

It was a widely acceptable practice many years ago. Should really only be used on walls.

 

It was there for 40 years. Quite a few were cracked, but I was surprised how many were loose yet still in one piece.

 

I hate that hollow sound from poorly laid tile

Simple shower we did. Color body porcelain. Nice tiles, very flat for big tiles. Let me have it....good, bad, right or wrong...

 

I think it looks great!

Some will blast for the running bond but I like it. Nice and clean looking.

Things that I would have done a bit different, but I wouldn't consider wrong would be centering the niche up and down.

I also don't like bullnose on the inside of the niche, but if you want a clean look, that's one way to do it. And it's really not the use of the bullnose, but how hard it is to get the corners to look nice. I usually just install a pencil around the perimeter if I can get away with it and the clean design look.

 

Thanks Rob! I will admit that I goofed my layout of the niche because I did want it centered better height wise.

I really like the pencil edging you posted. With this tile the only choice was bullnose. I like a Schluter profile too but the client did not like the look of that.

 

Yeah, I'm still on the fence about Schluter profiles. They still smell a bit commercial and can give the bathroom a Burger King bathroom feel.

 

Thanks! Yep color choice was the clients, but I like it. It is simple and clean.

We use Sterling shower bases. Never had any issues with them.
