Ref: Air Waves Under New Vinyl Flooring (posted 5/23/2009)

Hi Guys,

What is the best and fastest way to remove the V-31 adhesive from a plywood subfloor after tearing out the Stainmaster Soft Step flooring? The flooring has been glued with V-31 and we need to tear out the new flooring with air waves and install a new one with MT-711 adhesive. Thanks!

Change the ply, faster & cheaper than trying to get the old adhesive off and will give you a better surface to start on the next time.

any product you use to lift/clean the adhesive will soak into the ply and could do a number of things,

de-laminate the layers of ply, stop the new adhesive taking hold, react with both the new adhesive and even the new flooring

hand scraping will just mess up the surface.

It went wrong the first time, d'ont let it go wrong again, also try to find out why it failed the first time and fix that while you are at it.

Thank you all for your constructive reply.

Removing the plywood will be very expensive. After tearing the vinyl out, we are planning to install a new plywood on the existing plywood for a new surface (unfortunally another layer of plywood surface). What is the minimum new plywood thickness will you recommend? Should we use glue and/or screw to attached the new plywood to the existing subfloor before installing a new vinyl with the MT711 adhesive?

Thanks again!

Approved ¼" underlayment. Multi-ply, Accu-ply, Halex, or even FibeRock, fastened, using staples or galvanized ring-shank nails. Patch coat imperfections, and lay the vinyl.
