Here's the detail of the project. Contractor is installing a new front door made out of alder wood and I plan on staining it with Olympic classic american interior stain and then use a spar urethane, 2nd part is the contractor is building shutters out of alder also, my question is should I use the same process or a siding stain with the owner knowing that there will need to be maintenance every 3-5 yrs, I'm not sure if a spar finish can handle the elements for the shutters. Thanks for any opinions or idea's.

Spar also says not to apply it to large surfaces. I would be concerned about failure with them being more exposed than the door.

Can you get a semi-trans stain to match the stain and spar system? that would be the safest bet. but then again that will only last 2 - 3 years before re-coat.
