I was removing a bunch of soil from an old crawl space recently and started finding lumps of coal. I filled a 5 gallon bucket. Now I'm wondering, what can I do with this stuff? Next Christmas, I'll definitely fill plenty of stockings for sure.

I'm pretty sure it's coal. The bucket was sitting in my shop so it's kind of covered in sawdust. I assume it's from an old coal burner furnace. I burned some and it smells highly toxic.

Could be lignite, certainly doesn't look like bituminous or anthracite. I'd toss it in the dump.

Anaconda MT has a huge pile of coal ( 200 X 300 X 50 yards high ) sitting on the ground since the smelter closed in 1981. I'm guessing that no utility wants to buy it for their power plant because they're afraid they'll buy into the Superfund liability
