Need to buy a good set of twist drill bits to replace my worn out Dewalt pilot point bits. Not sure if I want to get another set of Dewalts or not. They worked very well in metal ,but are sometimes way too aggressive in wood and actually thread themselves very rapidly into the wood. What brands do you all use?

For most Carpentry tasks,I use whatever no-name brand HSS twist bits My local hardware store stocks. I buy 'em by the piece, since most bits under 1/4" got lost or broken easily(I actually several of each size) and have had good luck with them, more so than the big-name brands. I do however, use my old Dewalt brad-points for fine work in wood and ONLY wood....that was expensive set! I'd go with something a little cheaper,so there'll be no love lost when it gets burnt out hitting a stray nail.

I have a set of Norseman Ultra-Dex that are great! They're not cheap, though, and I pretty much save them for working on my Bronco. I think i paid about $70-80 for a 29 pc kit. comes in a really nice plastic box with sealed screw off lid. For wood I pretty much grab whatever. I have DeWalt, Bosch, Skil...........

Depends what work your doing. My festool bits are the best I ever used but they only ever come out when I know 100% that there's nothing metal for them to hit.

Next down the line are my dewalt bits. They are them pilot point bits but as someone said they sure do bit but shame they cause so much tear out.

Next are my HSS hitachi bits. I like these because they easy to sharpen and replace if need be. These are used for anything. Even concrete at times but they sharpen easy so no issues there.

Then I have a hitachi impact set that has quick connect ends so I can put them in my impact. These are also easy to sharpen so get used for dirty work.

I use the Dewalt pilot points and have a large index of Hitachi. I have an Irwin set as well.

I stay away from anything black oxide because they dull so quickly.

I've always wanted to become proficient at sharpening bits, Idk if a drill doctor would be the ticket or not.

Bits? Whatever reputable brand is closest to my right index finger at the time of purchase.

Sets? Once every ten years.....cause we use 3 or 4 of them 98% of the time; the ones that break oh so often. If I had a dollar for every 19/32nds bit I have..... or tapered coountersink sitting around with a broken bit.

The DW pilots are good for small stuff, batchit nuts over a 1/4".
