Hi, My name is Michael. I've been a lurker here for a while- just getting around to introducing myself. I've been in the business for almost 40 years. I've owned and operated cabinet shops and been a GC. Came up the traditional way: first a grunt then framer and eventually finish and then management. For the last 10 years or so I have worked as a super and PM for several large Residential Contractors. I was lucky enough to be a victim of the Recession, which forced me out on my own again. Just pulled my Lic in Ca & Wa. I say lucky because the year prior to being laid off I was responsible for 1.5 Mil of my previous employers net. They compensated us very well so I don't think I would have been motivated to strike out on my own otherwise- nothing like a regular paycheck and obscene benefits to make you complacent.
Even with the economy in the toilet we have been able to do Ok. It is a very good time to have a bare bones overhead- Bidding is ruthless. Since the average job has been much smaller, our primary difficulty has been the unlicensed competition. I'm fortunate to have an outstanding staff that I have worked with before and a solid client list.
Over the last few years, I've gotten some solid information from this site, although I have to admit, I have also cringed a few times. I look forward to contributing to the discussions and providing a source for a few cringes in return.
Michael
