Vinyl and Hardie Installation

Hi there, I am new to the site, hope to get some good info...
I am a framer and am building my own house near Calgary, Alberta.
I feel like some guys are kind of taking me by quoting me close to
$18,000 for Hardie work and material. Isn't this too much?
My house is 2300 sq. ft without the basement. Even though I am
in the construction trade, I feel like I have no clue about this
relatively new product and the install of it.
Canadians out there, WTH is an average price for the install
of both 'nice looking, contemporary' Vinyl and Hardie? (materials and
labour)
Does anyone know if Americans can come up (only 3.5 hrs or so) to do install? We are having a bit of a boom (still in 2009!) and I am
wondering if guys are overcharging because they can...
Thanks

I charge per sq. foot. I have a flat price for 7" reveal, small increase for over 8', a small increase for every inch the reveal narrows, and another square footage price for hardie shingle or hardie panel. Heck, if you are really a contractor, why aren't you siding your own house?? As to the price, prices vary with regions and the what your house looks like- is it all "cut up"? Are there dormers, etc.
I love lamp

2300 sq. ft. does not give enough information. As a framer, you should know that. I want to build a 2500 sq. ft. contemporary 2 story. How much would you charge me to frame it?
Do you know the square footage of all the siding that needs to go up? In your case, I would expect a reasonable rate would be tree-fitty a square foot.

Hey, Lone.

I was thinking the same thing.

Could this framer be a DIYer?
Timm it all depends there is no envelope or rainscreen in Calgary yet right?
are you going colorplus hardi or primed board? reveal? 7 8 6 ?
how about belly bands and window detail?

shoot me a pm I could find a good installer from my supplier and let you know

Wes
too many variables when just saying 2400 sq ft house. how many windows + doors, gable ends. trim detail, decks. exterior electrical outlets

all those add time to the install be it extra prep or extra cutting. one thing i will say is vinyl is way cheaper than hardie. we get 5" reveal hardie at just under $20 a pc pre painted, vinyl is like $4-5 depending on the stye and color
