Utility poles

We been blasting these utility poles for a couple years now they bring them in by semi flatbed a load at a time to blast then ship back to there yard to rust the blasting creates a uniform rust pattern and I've noticed it threw out my travels these poles look painted but actually just rust kinda different and personally not real sure what the deal is because seems they would last longer with a coating on them

Those poles are made out of weathering steel. They could be coated but not needed. Sometimes they will coat the bottom section that is placed below ground for added protection. Blasting them does let them rust more evenly. We've done several bridges in shop for the same purpose to let them rust evenly. The steel has a high nickel content and is usually called Cortin. It's been around for a very long time now.
I could be wrong but heard that the rust coat is a protective coat, doesn't make sense to me but that's what I heard. They were common where I lived in Texas.

The upside is they don't need maintenance like painted poles and cost less than galvanized poles.

The Mackinac and Golden Gate bridges are constantly being cleaned of scale and painted. When they finish after three or so years, it's time to start all over again.
Corten steel is what most ocean containers are made out of as well as some ships hulls though never left bare, always painted
Just google Corten Steel (images) to see lots of cool, rusting architectural stuff made with corten
Yep Corten is it. Gotta love auto correct on iPhone. I didn't catch it till now and it still wanted to change it back to Cortin. But yes, the rust does become a protective layer.
The brown stuff they use for guard rails on highways.

Yep... it's pretty cool stuff.
I blasted steel for the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, NY. To tell you the truth I think it looks unfinished.

What part of Texas did you live in? I dont know that i have ever seen these. They power poles? Where they found?
All over Texas. As well as most bridges and over passes in Houston and Dallas. Just look for rust stained roadways and then look up. We have several here in Alabama too. The famous Dolly Parton bridges right before you get into Mobile on I-65.
Up here in Maine, they have been switching to the light poles on the highways to the "rust look" Cheeper than the Matiance Over the years. My brother in law was putting them up for a company up here. He was trying to get them to have me blast them, they was like "no that's how there suppose to look" even the guys on the crew had never seem them before. Guess Maine's moving into the age ( a few years late) lol

DFW area, the new street lights they put on N. Airfield drive is this type.
Dang Blast Off, I come over to Dallas about four times a year. How close are you to Rowlett? I stay at the LaQuinta off if I-30 on Bob Town Road. I need to get you to applying Polyurea coatings. At least get you in touch with the company there. They have customers that needs blasting done from time to time.
Thanks Benny but I moved from DFW to back home that's just North of Grand Rapids, MI about 3 years ago. I do miss Texas right about this time of year though.
