USB Dongle turns off PC BEFORE its plugged in

So I bought a USB to SATA dongle it worked great for 2 laptop drives I have, but not for a desktop drive, thinking it maybe the USB Hub, I decided to try the USB 3.0 sockets on my motherboard...

Before I am able to plug the dongle in, (about 2" from the case) the computer just shuts off... like BAM! OFF!

Im like wtf? did we lose power? look around no the desk light is still on, move the dongle+ HD away, PC starts up, by itself... move it closer shuts off... like WTF?

the dongle + Hard drive are NOT self powered, and get their power from the USB Bus. neither even touched any part of the computer...

just get about 2-3" from the back of the case, BAM SHUTS OFF! Not shut down, like OFF, like you pulled the plug out of the wall kind of off...

I have NEVER experienced anything like it, ever...

Ideas?

P.S. now I am afraid to plug it in period. LOL

PS.S. I repeated the steps above like 5X cause I was completely blown away... remember, neither the dongle or drive even touched the computer...

It could be some kind of freq feedback or the HD has some kind of shock protection and when you get it close to the PC it shuts off. as the drive gets closer to the PC.

Def is a strange problem though. I have 5 hot swap drive bays so rarely have to use my USB to Sata dock but when I do its pretty good. I never move it from where it sits though.
That is odd.
Static electricity?

Was happening to me this winter, I phone Cord, thumb drives... As soon as I got close or just as the plug hit the connector - blink - :censored:

Started touching the case with my free hand, ground the connector, and it stopped happening. Give it a try to rule it out.
ya my paw was on the tower the whole time, two rule out govt spies, i took a multimeter to the dongle+ hard drive. .003 volts with the leads just dangling... .003 volts on the various connectors. id say im safe in that department.....:whistling
I had a USB extender that would cause a computer to go into a standard shutdown procedure. Ended up being a naughty registry file that Malwarebytes solved.
Sounds like it's causing a short somehow, but it's still very odd. As for the desktop drive not working, you probably don't have enough power. Laptop drives draw less power than a desktop drive. Desktops drives need to have their own power supply. Power from the USB bus is likely not sufficient to run it.
