Upgrading alternator and wiring

4159 Views 26 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Morning Wood
Im putting a 200 amp alternator in my truck. I'm thinking I should upgrade the wiring to the battery as well. What kind of size should I be looking at? Ground as well? Can I just add an additional wire to the existing wiring? Place where I am getting alternator sells an additional wire to add on to existing factory wire, but that doesn't seems like the best option. Thanks, Nick

I upgraded my alternator, but did it with something that was oem (from another vehicle).. That way I could get it locally and have a warranty.

If it goes out I can get a replacement same day and keep pushing:thumbsup:
Well apparently dcpower does have an alt that fits my truck. Whatever. I talked to one of their techs. I asked him about the big 3 wiring thing. He said I should add a 0 gauge wire between the alternator and battery with an inline fuse. As well as a 0 gauge wire from battery to chassis. He said that was the big 3 upgrade. He said I shouldn't touch the factory wiring, but just add on to it with the larger wire. I'm gonna give it a shot. Can't hurt.

I'll have my old alternator rebuilt locally and have it for backup. I can be back in action in a couple hours. Well, not action, but headed to the gas station to fill the tank.

A good shop should be able juice up the output on your backup
I am pretty sure my truck...1999 F250, has a high amp alt from the factory. I replaced it about a year ago and remember something about that. So you may want to look into that option...maybe it's part of the ambulance package?

....I looked on rock auto. Amp ratings vary from 95 to 130 so never mind

Keep an eye on the fluid in the battery unless its GEL, 200 amps could easily boil the fluid out. AND NO ITS NOT WATER!
Ok. I'll check the battery "water level"
