A client would like to make her unusable attic space above a bedroom trey ceiling usable. I have no experience working with or above trey ceilings and, not being an architect or engineer, am not sure where to start. Can you build on top of trey ceilings? Would the joists have to be replaced or strengthened?

Any advice, references, etc. would be very helpful. Thanks!
