Tiled Arch Ceiling?

3189 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Hackattack
Customer would like tub surround with arched lid 60x32 tiled. Any suggestions on what to use as backer for this? I could bend 1/2" drywall but i dont think a cbu or densesheild(to be used on walls) will work.
Thanks in advance for your help.

If you use a membrane over the drywall idea, it will be just fine.

cough, cough, Kerdi, cough......
There are a lot of bendable tile backers, just do a google search or call your tile wholesaler and ask them.
Permabase bends easily and can be put onto arched ceilings, etc.
Paper, wire and wall mud. Figure out the radius and build a screed. Old school look, requires a old school technique.

A couple of layers of 1/4" permabase would be my choice if you're not experienced with mudding ceilings. Or don't feel like doing it.

I would not recommend installing a sheet membrane like Kerdi (or tile for that matter) over a painted ceiling. Your entire tile installation will be relying on the bond strength of paint to primer to drywall. That's a lot of weight to trust paint with.
Congrats! You have responded to a thread that would be in 8th grade I'd it were a kid..
Yep, I see that now. Don't know why it would have come up on on my dashboard, seems like a thread from 8 years ago would be buried by now.
