Day 1, deconstruction of shower curb/pan...

Can you guess from these photos how it was constructed?

The end of the curb slab shows a molly where the glass track was mounted.

Curb was wrapped inside and top in kerdi... outside was green board.

Back of curb slab with thinset still adhered. Looks like 9235 was applied to the top of the hardi--no mesh though.

Tile from inside of curb, showing wood lathe cleat still attached--must've been their mortar screed guide.

Peeling the mortar bed up... juicy...

Is that pressure treated lumber?
Did they use a bunch of tile spacers to shim the curb topper??

Holy crap that looks bad...
Not treated. Yes, there were some spacers buried under one corner of the curb. Not a big deal compared to the other issues.

So what products for the rebuild?
I'm assuming that the whole room is coming down....
The shower will be completely removed to the studs... we're not sure how far we'll have to take the floor down. At least to subfloor--perhaps more if there are structural problems.

What was the shower waterproofing Chris? Kerdi or 9235?

The glazers install fasteners throw the waterproofing?

There was no water proofing, essentially.

I think they 'tried' to use 9235 but as in the other shower, they probably only applied a single coat of liquid to the mesh.

By the looks of this shower, they only used mesh on the floor and up the sides a little. The top of the curb was the liquid from 9235 ONLY, with no mesh.

Gross! I don't even know how many rotten showers I have had to tear out! Always a shame.

My right hand man redid an entire apartment complex (120 showers failed). Each and every one was a single coat of paint on as a waterproofer...

Chris,
How is the homeowner through all of this? Are they shocked, upset or just going with the flow... did anyone contact the builder or tile installer?
This is an unfortunate situation...
They're past the upset. Just want it fixed & done.

They tried their best to get somewhere with the builder... but he stopped returning their calls.

The hits keep on coming.

The clamping drain (with no liner... caked with silicone...)

Tuesday surprise....a water bottle of piss tucked away for posterity under the shower bench.

Inside the water closet... left side... right side...
