..is already happening. Major market changes are right around the corner.

Here's an interesting take on when and how.

Yea I see a lot of them on a daily basis around here including charging stations etc

No doubt for cities, but there is still the issue of battery technology. I too think it is around the corner, but regardless of how green, it still takes a lot of carbon to make.

Sure does, and it'll take a lot of carbon to produce the electricity.

Still, it might somehow be more efficient overall. And having a vehicle with less internal moving parts could be a plus.

Definitely depends on the area: up here in Ontario almost all of our power comes from hydroelectrixity (people here actually call electricity "hydro") and nuclear (with a small amount of natural gas), and the former two methods have an extremely small carbon footprint over their entire life cycle.

I agree with you that if you're burning coal to charge your car in Ohio then its going to be worse for air pollution though.

The green argument aside, I like the concept of charging at home, never pulling into a gas station. No oil changes. No transmission fluid. Brakes every 200,000 miles.

It's all about regenerative breaking. Now you don't waste energy when you slow down. That's why you can have a hybrid that gets such good mileage without charging it.

I'm all for it. There are a bunch of issues to get yo 100% electric.

It wouldn't work for me driving distances.

You do over 250 miles a day?

Not uncommon at all.

They do have superchargers on some highways I'm told, although I definitely get your point about the range being an issue for some drivers.

Get a plug in hybrid.

It's retarded to buy a vehicle that has limited range imo.

Hey buddy wanna go to Colorado to hunt mulies in Trinidad?

Nah bro, my truck won't make it, would have to charge 3 times lol

What's more retarded is burning 50 bucks in gas instead of 7 in electricity. You could still rent a truck for long trips, or get a plug in hybrid, best of both worlds.

That solves a problem I don't have. Great in-town mileage doesn't do anything for highway...

Maybe in about 30 years when they get the kinks worked out. I'll stick to my truck. It's not efficient to own both.

Agreed, you live 100 miles out of town?
There's something to be said for how trains do it. Fossil-fueled electric generators that distribute the electric power. They're like miles-long priuses, in some respect.

I think we're a ways away from this catching on in any rural areas. The stuff we use our trucks for out here in the sticks don't really lend themselves to not having gas power at the moment.

But the batteries keep getting better, and the technology will evolve to get them there eventually I think. When they get to the point where you can work the truck for a 12 hour day and then go home and plug it in to the wall, then wake up at 5:00 in the morning and it's ready to go, maybe we'll have something we can use.
