The contractor we hired gave a quote per square foot to install the veneer stone. He know tells us that when the job is done the want to be paid for the open spaces of the windows and doors that the stone went around. Is that the norm?

Had a mason from England working with us several years ago...

It was/is common practice across the pond to price jobs this way. The idea being that the 'extra' square footage from the blank space of the window or door would cover the extra work required to fashion and install quoins, sills and arches around these openings.

However, when you're talking about the huge windows and doors we see today... a little common sense is needed.
Further, if you're talking 'thin-stone', then there really is no extra effort required to go around a window or door...

This is part of the reason I won't just give a client a square foot price for stonework. It may serve as a good starting point to get a rough estimate for the job, but there are so many other factors to consider that I will now only give an all-inclusive "quote' which includes the entire scope of work.

Ignore any opening less than 10 Square feet..... is a common rule.

A flashed, drip edged, mortar netted, weeps, with pre cast stone, or an arch,or a row lock wrap, probablely an added charge, not any deduct.

What do your painters, dry-wallers and framers do?

The vast majority of openings on residential work aren't laid out on bond and do require "extra" thinking, and waste material. Crooked buildings or ones with cheap windows and doors might even required added returns to reach the 10 cent window frames....:censored:

Many houses the window heads aren't even laid out to each other.

Or some aren't installed plumb or square requiring even more layout work to "hide" the faulty installs.
