I had been hoping to take care of this while they were out of town, but it didn't look like that will be an option.

I have to remove the existing railing, install new tread caps, then install the new railing. I'm figuring on about 3 days for that, and obviously I don't want to risk anyone falling while the work is being done.

Any input/ recommendations would be much appreciated

At the end of the day I used to clamp a temporary railing to the treads, double 2x4 screwed to a block of 3/4 ply and screwed 2x4 handrail to that. If they had kids I screwed additional 1x4s to posts

Get more help?
Use OSHA style clamp on guard posts and metal hand rails as needed.
Use old crap for odd spaces as needed.

Who sneaked this turd past the loan and permit people? that is un- insurable as is.

Build a temp stairway about 40 inches over existing right hand stair to top landing.....move to right landing second day....

Yes, you need to provide something...

Can you do it in sections? Limit the amount of temporary barricades and handrails.

And close off access to the stairs during work. Barricade with a sheet of plywood.

In the 70s that was a very common railing along with the white or almond laminate cabinets with the strip of wood at the top and bottom

Spoke with the homeowners, they are going to vacate the house for the weekend after Thanksgiving so I can have 3 days to get it back together.

I'm not super stoked about working the whole weekend, but it sets my mind at ease not having to worry about getting a temp railing up and secured.

Plus side, 3 days in an empty house to work as many hours as I need to with the music cranked
