Spring hinges?

1663 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  The Coastal Craftsman
I have three out swing residential style doors on a small commercial job and need something to keep them from blowing open in the wind. I didn't order them with blocking for commercial closers which I have on hand :censored:.

I was just looking at the link Griz posted for screws and saw some spring hinges. These look like they may be just the ticket. How many per door do I need? One or two? I assume one on bottom and one on top? How well do they work?

I think you would have to set them on a high setting in order to fight the wind. Honestly I don't think you will get the results you are wanting. Once you set them so high all they will do is slam the door very hard. They have power on the close with not much power on the open.

All the above jibber Jabber makes sense to me but I hope you got something out of it. Lol
Re-plug the head of the door - put in a new block, For a closer.

Spring loaded hinges like those in the link .. You'd need at least 2 per door. We do half doors with them bad boys for cash offices. 3/0 solid core door 40" tall. Two spring hinges half loaded - is don't let the door hit you in the arse.

Compared to a properly adjusted closer - the spring hinges can mess up fingers if they are adjusted to high. Air pressure forces on doors can be pretty high also.

Tho nothing to loose to try a pair of spring loaded butts and see. Cheaper/less time than re-plugging he door.
Hey there buddy

The spring loaded butts should be fine. Or also what we call a perlico/concealed chain door closer that might work.

Happy swinging my friend.
Thanks all. Still not sure what to do. It is a fiberglass door with a full light. Reblocking would be a nightmare.

However, these are a thought. I'll have to do some measurements.

Good luck finding them over here. Used to use them in the UK a lot and can't find them anywhere hear. I think reason is because they ain't designed for hollow core doors. Most doors in residential in UK are solid core. I wouldn't like to say how well they would hold. Them springs have a massive amount of pressure on the door frame.
