...are just great people.

I was going to go into a big song and dance about our own Jaws (John) but it's not necessary. Those of you you have taken the time to read his posts know full well what kind of a guy he is; the best.

So, here's the reason for this post.

Back in January, John commissioned me to make two leather pouches for him to give to a dear friend's two boys. He described his friend to me as a "warrior"; someone who has served many tours in the middle-east and is now enjoying life back in the USA. Think about the word "warrior" and you'll get the picture...I don't have to go into detail.

Anyway, I'm sitting, making these pouches and it dawned on me...I can't charged John for these. These pouches are going to a man that was willing to die for me...take a bullet and be dead...for me...and you...and...us.

I sent the pouches out to John with a note to his friend, thanking him for his service and that it was my pleasure, my honor to make these for his two boys...gratis; the very least I could do.

John never read the note to his friend (Classy. He could have as the envelope wasn't sealed...but he didn't. It wasn't addressed to him you see)

John texted me saying he got the pouches and loved them...posted a picture with praises to me in a thread entitled "Leather Work".

Two days later I get an envelope from John with a lot of cash in it.

I text him back...nope, absolutely not...these are my gift. We argue back and forth a bit. I send the cash back.

So...I arrive home today and waiting for me on my back porch is a box...from John. WTF?

I open it up and here's what's inside. The most beautiful handmade knife from a local knife-maker in a hand-made sheath. Wow!...Just stunning, the workmanship, the quality, the materials...everything. I love knives. I absolutely love quality knives. I now own a beautiful handmade, quality knife.

Thanks John. It was totally not necessary but appreciated beyond words.

Jaws....the real deal. The real "good guy".

Perfect for making muskrat stew

Nice. I like straight blade kanifes. I've lost a few of my nicer ones or somebody helped themselves

I love the handle

Yeah he is my favorite knife maker by far. Local. Robert Garcia.

The handles are always awesome. My favorite knife I've gotten from him has a longer handle than blade, it's great for getting around joints. Only thing bad about the bone handle knives is the blood gets in the grooves and you have to really work to get it out.

Benchmade and the like don't touch them. I have a 50 - 60 year old Case that holds an edge about as well, but it was my grandfathers, and like his guns and spurs I rarely use as they are heirlooms. To be honest its not as quality a knife though

The way the handles fit in your hand are where the art comes into the science.

Well, old Robert Garcia will get some more business from me. I am completely dumbfounded how I am retarded enough to have put a bag full of knives on my tool box out of my backseat and took off. I spent four hours looking for them. I also lost four Clips to my sidearm.

Well, I guess we can mark one up for capitalism. LOL

Yep. Sucks. I've had the first skinning knife for about a dozen years. Probably butchered 50 animals with it.

The hard lessons stick with you the best .

I lost $1,500 cash once. I went through a toll both , didn’t have any change in the console of the truck . I dug out a wad of cash out of my front pocket and paid the toll . Then I put the cash in my lap and forgot about it . I stopped by the job to see how things were going and dropped the cash on the street . I didn’t miss it until I was at another jobsite .
Of course it was gone when I went back . That was 20 years ago , and I still feel like a dumb ash .

It's amazing how much sentiment can go with a knife. My buddy has a folder that his father carried in Vietnam, but not as his combat knife. Probably a 3 1/2 inch blade opened one way and locked, and a marlinspike opened and locked the other way. Yachtsman's folder with a locking blade.

I don't think he would have traded it for anything.

I'm not dressed unless I have a pocket knife on me.
I usually stay with the same one for 10-15 years before changing to a different one.
I don't think I've ever lost one.

My first time. I lost one in that bag I've had since I was 18, paid 200 dollars for it - a fortune at 18. Ivory handle, a dude named Amador Aleman made it....hes dead...

Well someone might be a good person - my business card was in the bag lol.

I'm going walnut handle this time. Old RG needs to stay in business so it's not all bad lol

Someone needs to ask. Why did you have a bag of knives in your truck? On the way to get sharpened?
