Simulated log, vinyl siding.

12818 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  loneframer
Hey guys, I have a friend who is interested in a simulated log, insulated vinyl siding. Anyone here have any experience or suggestions with this?

I'm going to do some research on it, but hoping to get some input from the CT family of pros.

Thanks in advance.

Fake log siding + old houses = really, really bad

If this was a dog, we'd do the humane thing, and put it out of its misery.

Tell me it's not *this* kind of fake log siding?

Nice Rose.

I'm not a big fan myself. The house I'm referring to is a single story, kind of old, with several wings added on to the sides, but would lend itself to a log home look and is in a very nice location in the NJ Pine Barrens.

I'm committed to research the matter, not only to advise her, but to educate myself as well.

I haven't seen a product I can even begin to like the look of at this point.

I also have concern with insulated siding in general.
i think it is fine.. but the corners and all J trim is nasty ugly

in my part of the world they try to sell people on the the R-value of the piece

sure some of it is 3" but what about the 1/2" areas? and the seam as a small gap of zero foam.
I myself would advise against it. It really does look fake. The r-value gained is so-so.

Thanks Tom, I knew you'd have some input.

She really likes the log look and her house is perfect for it. She has a stuffed black bear in her living room:clap:, next to the wood stove, which sits on a bog ore hearth. She dug and transported the bog ore herself. Lots of cool hand made Cypress/Driftwood furniture...

I'd really like to find something that will set the house off, but without the wood maintenance.
Why not use log siding, just not vinyl fake log siding.
I mean real log siding. Quite a few log home companies are doing their homes to get a higher R value. Hybrid wall set up.

The first thing I mentioned was the ship lap log siding. She doesn't want the maintenance of wood siding. I can't say I blame her, but I'm on the fence with vinyl logs. I'm really going to have to see a home done in them to convince me of the viability.
Nothing against the installation, that looks good, but that fake stuff Tom did looks...fake. Especially on a real log home.
maybe painted steel would look right Lone?maybe a board and batten style..i like that look in a woodsy setting,do the gables in natural or prefinished wavey edge cedar?

The primary focus is very low maintenance, so real wood, prefinished or not, is probably not going to happen.

There's vinyl on the house now, done when the wings were added on, apparently.

I'm not going to try to sway what she wants, but I am going to try to find the nicest looking product for the job.
