I used to use screw but found they would also not stand the test of time.

I now use flat, headed screws with nuts and lock washers.

I predrill each hole to avoid splintering the wood. I have a helper on the inside applying the nuts and lock washers. Each bolt is tightened to 23 ft pnds. Never had a problem.

Listen this method may take a little longer than most, but piece of mind is worth the extra time.
