I got stuck doing the floor prep for a job I'm working on. Some glued down carpet removal and some tile removal on concrete slab. I have one SDS plus hammer drill with chisel bit but looking to pick up another one so two guys can tear into it. Looking for recommendations on a decent quality but economical hammer drill. Thinking I might get a little bigger SDS max type hammer drill. Or maybe even a bigger demo type hammer drill. Not looking to spend a grand right now around the Holidays money is a little tight. But would like a decent quality second drill. Anyone have some good recommendations? Thanks.

Also if you have advice on the best bit for tearing up tile and thinset.

I have the 13 amp Bosch SDS max Demolition hammer, its strictly a demolition hammer and won't drill holes but makes up for that loss in the added power you get from it. Its amazing how well it does at absorbing vibration, Its nice that you can put it down after an hour of hammering and you arms not be jello lol, also the weight is well balanced.

I tried four others before getting it including a Hilti which was better but the cost was 1800$ compared to 550$

Recently used a bosch sds hammer drill to tear up about 400 sq ft of tile. Worked amazingly well. Got a bit heavy after a while though. Seems like the locked bit position is a little funky. I would personally like to try something a little smaller like the bulldog, it looks like it would be a bit easier on your arms as long as it has enough power to knock everything up.

edit: also probably wouldnt get an air chisel. Have seen people use em and they look like a lot of downtime

I believe what op is talking about a rotary hammer .A hammer drill is more of a drill with hammer feature .excellent for tapcons and small bits .rotary hammer is for concrete ,doesn't do wood so well . demo hammers can do some chipping .
someone had an article on small chipping rotary hammers , recall being surprised of the fastest tool ,it was not bosch .Went looking through my pile of magizines .Thinking it was in"tools of the trade", but maybe JLC . it was a great review . Maybe someone else recalls it .

Yes I'm looking for a second rotary hammer. Sorry I call them all hammer drills. I have a decent milwaukee SDS plus rotary hammer. Need to pick up a second one so two guys can bust out some tile. Thinking about picking up a more heavy duty "demo" type rotary hammer to have more options then just my SDS plus milwaukee. But also trying to keep budget tight this time of the year. Thinking something that I can run a chisel, and shovel, and other specialty attachments with that my sds plus can't really do. I have plenty of hammer drills to drill holes so looking for more of a demo hammer. And especially for removing tile right now.

Looking for advice on which model to get and maybe even picking up a used one.

what model Milwaukee do you have.I have the 5341 or 5352 .If yours is not bigger then get a larger one .this one has a real tough time on my 1 1/8" bit .It has a useless chipping feature . I bought a demo hammer ,just hammer /no drill .So super nice when you need it .picked it on craiglist . this place has some nice prices http://bigskytool.com/Demolition_Hammers___c336.aspx .i recall reading an old review recently and the hilti was the fastest .though no info on the model tested and it was a dated review . I have made some great purchases from the big sky . wish I could find that review , I will say the demo/chipping hammer has come along way .Looks like they break concrete . I will keep searching for the newer review .I recall that the ones that did the best were not the ones i expected .hilti was more expensive and the bosch just wasn't the performer .

I'm not sure the model of my milwaukee rotary hammer. I would call it a medium sized one and it drills holes real nice but I've never been real impressed with it's ability to break up concrete.

I'm looking at bosch SDS max rotary hammers right now and there are a TON of choices and are a little confusing. All the choices of amps, size of drill bits, blows per minute, rpms, ft lbs of impact energy, etc. I'm mainly looking for something to use chisels with. Breaking up concrete. Tearing out tile. Things like that. I have a half dozen other smaller hammer drills including my milwaukee that I can use for drilling anchor holes. So this new drill will mainly be used with chisel bits and maybe a shovel bit or things like that.

I found a bosch 11240 on clearance for 330 bucks locally, http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-11240-1...1240-16-Inch-SDS-Max-Combination/dp/B0000695HG/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8. Is this a good drill for chisel bits? It says 1 9/16" but only 10 amps. So it has a bigger capacity then others but lower amp motor. On amazon it's a 500 dollar drill so 330 would be a good price.

Then there is a bosch rh540m for 390 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-RH540M-...ion/dp/B00HUCUJG6/ref=sr_1_1?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1417728345&sr=1-1&keywords=rh540m. A little more amps and still 1 9/16" capacity.

I'm kind of leaning towards the 330 dollar clearance one. What are the most important specs when buying a hammer drill for tile and concrete chiseling? Amps, BBM, 1 9/16" or 1 1/8" bit capacity, or what? So many variables between them all it's hard to pick the right one. If you guys think that first one, the 11240 would work good then I will pick that one up tomorrow before it's gone since it's on clearance. Thanks

this might help .review in jlc /nov/2005 .tested 6 ,bosch 11241 scored very much last due to being the slowest at drilling 7/8" holes .89seconds per hole vsr fastest being hitachi DH40mr at 58 seconds ,next makita HR4000c at 60 seconds .Dewalt D25500K came in a 67 seconds . these would make great digging tools . The model unfortantly is not exact so it maynot help much . there was alot of talk on a different forumn regarding makita's anti vibration features and how nice it was .

I ended up getting a new bosch rh540m today. It has more power and supposed to be more impact energy then the other one that was on clearance. Along with other things like variable speed and some shock absorbent features. Looks like a nice drill and will give it a workout sometime in the near future. Got it on sale for 389 which I think is a pretty good price for what it is. I did find a review on rotary hammers, http://www.toolboxbuzz.com/head-to-head/best-sds-rotary-hammer-drill-head-to-head-testing/4/. The rh540m didn't do the best but I guess time will tell. It was the only one I could get locally so it's what I went with. I think it will be good for what I need.
