You can cut it anyway you want, even to the ground and it grows back no matter what....at least that's what it does in my dad's backyard/garden. He can't kill it and it drives him nuts. He wants it out of there.

It seems once they grow longer, when bulbs develop, they have a tendency to droop so much they start laying on the ground during the year.
But at least as a side note, they are beautiful....He can't kill it and it drives him nuts. He wants it out of there.
