When I started out I tried to re use the black diamond and was never able to get good results. Lots of gaps in the flow and stopping all together. I would shake the pot to get it working again for a minute or so. That was a small shop blaster. I now own two prfessional pots and use glass and when I have tried again I get the same results.

I see a number of you in here say that you do sweep the stuff up and reuse it. Can anyone tell me that you actually do not experience any real trouble almost at all and that you remain productive this way?

If so can you guess at what I am doing differently that is keeping me from being able to just throw it back in and get back to work. Of course I screen it but I don't see a problem with large particles so much as I think it is all the fine dust that may just cake up in there. The way flower clumps when you pour it while granulated sugar flows. Thanks for any sugestions.

I think you answered your own question.

“I think it is all the fine dust that may just cake up in there"

Its packing itself, when you shake your pot it loosens it.

90% of the people have at some time or another tried to sift out grit through a window screen, the other 10% are lying. :w00t:

My old job had huge Vacuumes, (10 of them) they would vacuum up 20 tons of steel shot a week or more. It pulled off the dust and recycled the grit.

I don't know about your $$ but I ain't got that kind!

You need to use a different media. Such as Aluminum Oxide, or Starblast. Crushed Glass is too soft and breaks down fast like Silica Sand and Coal Slag products. Crushed Glass is softer than many realize and once it is used as a blast abrasive you now have Free Silica. They advertise that is is silica free but what is used in the making of glass????????????? So make sure that you use proper PPE while working around it. Plus, who wants glass particles in there lungs?????????

Thank Benny again for the great insite.
It's nice to have people on here like you.
Thanks again.

I use an air feed, MSA tight fiting PPE. with Co monitor. The only way to go.

What do you guys wear for protction?

When I blast I use a NOVA 2000 series blast hood. I do not use peel off lenses due to the dust that get's inbetween the lens's and the time it takes to replace them. I prefer to use the standard outter lens and keep plenty of spares tucked into my coveralls. This way I can change out lens without removing the hood and get back to work quicker. And of course always use a good air filtering system for grade "D" breathing air along with a properly set-up and calabrated CO monitor.

I'll look in to that star blast Benny. I hadn't thought about it turning in to free silica after. It's just hard to get a decent cost with hundreds in shipping. I have limestone I am trying from a local place at $17. a bag. My glass in a super sack is only $6. per 50 lb with shipping. That's hard to beat and people still want everything cheaper as it is.

That price from Norton is way too much. Give these people a call. http://www.fandsequipment.net/

They are in Birmingham, Al. but they will beat that price by almost half. Ask to speak to John Johnston or to Robert and tell them that Benjy Abbott sent you. They are great people and they have a lot of years in the buisness.

I just bought a Bullard helment
I've tried a number of times to use it and still have not made it through a hour of blasting with it.
When I do boat bottoms the Bullard helment moves around alot and it always fells like its falling off.
I've used the MSA respairtors for so long that I'm stuck in a grove with it.
The MSA is a tight fiting respairtors Made for confined spaces, but I feel that it stay's put when I'm moving around in a tent under a boat.
MSA has a green rubber seal that can fit 4 plexi glass shelds in. its a tight fit so dust does not make it in between. changing lenses is as easy as fliping down a plastic holder, taking a finger and poping one at a time out. most the time I can do this with one hand.
I used the MSA in small tanks for 10 Years at my last job, so I'm use to useing this type. it hard to change.
My 2 cents. sorry for the long post?

I have not used the MSA hoods, but I have used the Bullards for many years and always hated the way that they moved on your head while blasting in moving conditions. The Nova's fit like a full face motorcycle helment and you could stand on your head and the hood will stay put on your head. They are cheaper than the Bullards and they last. The first time that we used them, we bought 20 of them from IDS Blast. Our Metallizers used them with a #5 shade that was cut special for the hoods and they loved them. I now throw rocks when I see a Bullard hood coming my way.

Fighting for the Bullard 88. I love my 88's the worst thing that ever happened to them is they put that new hose on them. The old ones and my new ones have the same breathing air line on the back of the helmet. We throw away the helmet lines they come with and make our own. The nova rubs on your fore head and makes your skin raw. I am used to wearing a hard hat not a diaper on my head. I like to be able to adjust when its getting cold. You can adjust a bullard to fit a sweat shirt hood or a stokking cap in it. The lamb chops are the only way to fit a nova. If you live in a blasting hood you want to be able to change how you fit in it. I find the Nova limmited in the fact you have to change out the whole inside of the helmet for diferent climates and non of the regular fittings or foster Ahrens parts work in them.

MSA's are great..............
used them all the time, before that i used a monkey face which is much smaller but now outlawed,REAL confined spaces if U never done it you dont know what real blasting is....................................... no BS
go with garnet for recycling and a good dust collector and multi screening.

Panderson, I have never had a problem using the Nova Hoods. I use a spray sock when I blast and that is all I have on my head other than the hood. Fit's very well and never a rub on my forehead. I have worn one all day before taking the thing off my head. As far as the fitting on the cool air tube, it is for a metric female end and all I do is take a wrench and take it off the cool air tube and replace it with a standard US 1/4" male hose quick connect end. Works fine. So far with everyone that I have suggested the Nova to, I have had 100% positive feedback and they all say that there Bullards will hang on the wall for good.

I finally got some one here that know what I mean when I say real confined spaces, like Navy Tanks on a boat.
Nothing Like crawing through the inner bottoms of a boat with air lines, blasthoses, and lights. shooting steel shot with a #8 at 120 psi.
These tanks have NO staging in them. useally your laying across a hole the size of a coffin, with your foot up your a$%.

The MSA hoods, before I pull a sweat shirt hood on then don the blast hood.
I still like the tight fit. you can run hot/cold tube too.

Havent seen a monkey face for years. when I frist started a guy had on in his locker. never used one though.
