Well i definitely made my decisions not to go commercial.

I show up to work...not participate in OSHA yoga. Were is my lumber and ill start plating.
And the plating changes here as well. Foreman were coming unglued when i was burning 3/4 then hook and go. Had the other framers scratching thier heads lol.

 

The mexican drywall crew on lot 448....they probably have the plumbers level too.

What amazes me, is osha is here to protect the employee. Then employees complain about osha.

oh and you can't use the top 2 rungs of the ladder. and have to maintain 3 point contact to the ladder at all times. need to reach up with both hands? OSHA fine-able offense. that'll be at least $1,500

this accident footage was filmed by an OSHA official who was on site. he didn't halt work. but he fined the contractors hundreds of thousands of dollars after the accident. thanks OSHA, you're really looking out for us and not at all bloodsucking vultures.

 

If I had osha as my private business I not only would be wealthy beyond my wildest dreams, everyone would be safer and I wouldn't be near as hated as the gov.

 

And just a fyi. You do not have to be tied off when on a ladder.

 

you absolutely do. to a tie off point with a 5,000 lb. load capacity. I just took OSHA 30 last week.

I will say. In the late 80's they changed that rule. Before you had to be tied off after 4', but more people were falling because of it.

 

he claimed that the 6' rule only applies to 'stable work platforms' and OSHA doesn't consider step ladders to be stable work platforms and they're one of the biggest jobsite hazards. guess he needs to study the book more.

 

I do a refresher every 2 years, I've gotten into disagreements with the instructor. That's the problem with getting certified, those people are certified to teach, but they don't work for osha. So they teach whatever they feel like.

 

They also are trying to outlaw walking top plate...

first time I walked the top plates on a union job everyone's jaw dropped and I got reamed out like a redheaded step child.

 

I still walk plate. A lot of the old school guys tend to respect the young guys who aren't scared...too many salad eating, limp wristed bros these days

 

Maybe your a gymnast cause there is no way I would walk a 2" x 4" wall in fact I don't see a reason to try.

 

I'm 28 and more 'old school' than any of the 50+ year old union guys I work with. it's sad.

 

Some people are born with it some people aren't....

 

A lot of track homes out here are 2x4 exterior walls so you learn quick to use that three and a half inches...

 

Ever had someone die on a job site? Or even serious disabling injury. Or even a loss time injury. It'll give you perspective.

And the work you who reads this does, is not all encompassing of construction. But OSHA has to be blanket.

We do calisthenics every morning on our concert work. Not a person complains. Easiest and safest 15 minutes of their day.

 

I know the risk everytime i put the nail bags on and go to work. If i constantly fussed over a potential "saftey" hazard i would get nothing done. Its dangerous work, but it wont complete itself.
Im not saying i dont support saftey, but OSHA is overkill. Common sense prevents most accidents. Any of them i have seen are all do to carelessness. Respect the trade or you wont be in it long.

My two cents.

 

I framed houses for 5 years straight with zero fall protection. never came close to falling off a roof or top plates or whatever else. I get into the union and they make me put on a harness and lanyard. you know how many times a day I trip over the lanyard and almost fall off the roof? or if I'm wearing a yoyo it's constantly pulling on my back constricting my movements tripping me up and messing up my back.

 

No doubt I agree with you, but 'common sense' isn't inherent. Unfortunately.

So we all suffer. In a magical world, OSHA orders would have a preface stating 'if you are a halfwit, idiot, show off, dip****, these are enforceable, all else, proceed as if you value your life, and use common sense..'

Magical we ain't in.

And they have different rules for when you're carrying something.

It's really not hard to be mostly osha compliant once you figure out what the rules really are.

 

I did this little funky thing yesterday on the custom our other crew is framing . Yea it was a piece of work .. The garage dog legged 45* off the house ..15/12 pitch . This cricket was a 5/12.. On the left side it tied into the 5/12.. On the right it died into a 4/12 with a weird mansard type cricket .. I suggested a better looking option but hey what do I know . And for those keen eyes , I did add another sleeper to pick up the long top cut

Job we finished a couple weeks ago

 

Second floor deck is on the puppy, just in time for another 18" of snow. I swear old man winter has it out for our crew. We've gotten a total of 4ft in the past 3 weeks

Yes kiteman. It's gonna be a hotel that's attached to the other building which was all run down, but the historic committee in this town/owners didn't wanna start from scratch. The addition is about 4000 sf, two stories, and a couple suites in the basement/walkout. It's kinda a fancy place used for weddings.
