Radio is VERY region dependent. I don't use it for this business but I used it extensively for my retail store and it was one of the top advertising values for us. We were able to buy up large packages at the end of the year so we were actually running around 5-6k spots a year. Running a small number of ads was very expensive, large quantities were much cheaper.

I did pretty extensive lead tracking with that company and feel confident that the leads were properly attributed.

Finding the right approach for your area is also critical. I ran fairly generic ads prepared by professionals for a couple years but found that people responded better to the less professional, more humorous, ads that I recorded with the station.

In a previous business I started with my brother we ran radio ads, it is cool to be listening the radio and hear one of you commercials come up. Did not notice any appreciable increase in sales, not to justify the expense anyways.

Someone I know runs radio ads locally during drive times. It's in an industry that's all about trust and integrity. He's one of the sleaziest, most predatory people I've ever met. I have to turn off the radio when the ads come on. It must be working for him, because he keeps running them.

You actually get calls that you know are from a radio commercial? I never would guessed that would get anything for this kind of business. What kind of customers have responded? I would imagine they call immediately as it airs. Is that you can tell it is from it? Or is it a feeling that you had more calls than you think you would have. I just finished a pay per click for another service I offer. I will never be certain which calls were from it as apposed to organic web results. I don't think I will do pay per click again.

I always ask my customers
How they found me.. They will tell you

I keep track a year or two ago and my biggest was the web page
Next was from a friend of there's
And last was adds from Craig list

I have tried local " free" papers
That's were you pay to put it but its free to the customers, some feedback on them as slot pick them up at grocery stores and where ever
But the cost from the add didn't off set the numbers of customers

I always know how they found me. The trouble with pay per click is all they know is they found you "on line". They don't know or care if it was on a pay per click ad which appears on the top or right or if it was in the list of organic results that most people read first. You couldn't sit and grill them about it and they clicked on dozens so they could never remember anyway.
When a person needs blasting they go out and look for it. The odds that even one person who happens to hear a radio ad needs blasting and actually picks up the phone right then and calls you is just about none I figure.
