I might be doing a large job in the next month of replacing at least 425 feet of gutters and rotted fascia boards. Possibly a total of 700+ feet will be replaced. I can also guarantee the rafter tails are rotted because drip edge was not installed on the roof.

Would you...

a. pry the nails from the face

b. pry between the fascia and rafter tails enough to yank the board off from one end

c. pry fascia just enough to cut the nails with a sawzall

I might try all 3 to see what works best just want to see what you guys would do.

You'll figure it out in less time than it took you to type this question.Just because theres no drip edge doesnt mean anything.Less that 1 in a thousand houses here have drip edge.

Remove the nails from the face. Make sure that you leave the center ones in place, and remove last.

Why do you think no drip edge means nothing? If it meant nothing why do they even make it?

It's a low pitched roof and driving rain can get between things and water wicks as we all know. I would never do a roof without it.

Its just the way it is here. Were re roof all the time and rarely see damage from not using it.

I've worked with both- bad damaged facia soffits with drip edge and old style shingles over the mitered facia that was in really good shape.

So it depends.

Don't mean to derail the thread but was always wondering if there is a really nice way of connecting the drip edge so that it will look somewhat perfect.

its all in how much time you take in cutting the drip edge. My local yard has a sample of a drip edge that has the slip joint from the factory-I've not tried it though.

the nails in the rafters is the easy part... its all the perimeter nailing thru the starter board that's gonna test both your sawsall skills and your patience:thumbsup:

^^^^^What he said. If they nailed on top, it sucks, if they nailed to teh side, it is easier but can still suck. And you'll probably do all three. Also, most of the time, you just have softness around the nails and the tails will be good, but not always.

If it's in that bad of shape I wood get a good roofer. I've run into some jobs that were so bad, a roofer was necessary.

I do a lot of fascia repairs but I'm no roofer.

Good staging. At least for the first 100 feet or so. By then you will have the system down.

Get a framing crew with a few pump jacks and they will bang this out in a day or two... because you gonna be hanging off that building until next Christmas.

Why not hire a roofer to pull the old stuff off and dispose of. Then hire a framer to put the new fascai on. Now have a gutter company finish the deal.

It don't pay to get a roofer there, then a framer and then a roofer back again. Framer can remove needed shingles if rafters or plywood needs to be repaired/replaced, install new fascia... then a roofer comes and does his thing with the roof, then the gutters.

I live about an hour away from you in Poquoson and I'm fairly new to the area. It blew my mind to see that very few of the houses here have drip edge and maybe 60% or so have gutters. I'd never seen one without them until I moved here.
