I have a client with a pool problem. When we turn on the heater for the spa or pool the contact picks up & the green heater light comes on for 1-2 seconds then teh contact drops out and the light extinguishes. I can also smell gas briefly then it goes away. It will do this over and over but not stay on.

Any ideas?

what kind of heater is it?? a common issue is a flame rollout sensor gets hit, but most will not reset when was the last time it was torn apart and cleaned?? sometimes the heat exchanger will get clogged with soot, etc and cause the exhaust to backflow into the heater itself, at which point you really have a BIG problem

If the rollout is shot, nothing will happen. You won't even smell any gas. It's a safety mechanism so as not to allow the heater to even try to light. Smelling gas means the valve has opened.

Heaters do not regularly need/get cleaned. They either work or they don't. If it's all sooted up and it lights, you will have plumes of black smoke coming out the top.
