Please help with Hardi Plank

I know you guys don't like questions like this but I really need to know something.

I started working for a contractor and he told me to read the Hardi installation manual. I have done about 10 houses now under him and everything is great.

3 houses ago he asked me to give him a price to side a house and take the job on myself. I told him I wasn't then a contractor and had no idea of resonable rates for installing Hardi.

As I said, I am just now finishing my 3rd house. (I work totally alone with the help of my Solo Sliders) The way it has worked out, I get paid $1.40/ SQ FT for the siding and was told that soffit & Hardi Fascia is part of the siding price. The last house worked out to doing the soffit & fascia (3 days work) for $64.

Now I live and work in Ontario, Canada and work exclusively for this guy. (We built 20-30 custom homes a year) I`m not going out to cut throat anyone. I just need to know if and how bad I am being raped by doing all of this work by myself. The house I am doing now is 2176 SQ FT of siding and about 200ft of soffit & fascia $3000 doesn`t seem like much. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Seems low. Are your prices in Cdn?
Do you pr:eek:ovide insurane?
so being by your self you need to side this house in 5-7 days to adequetly carry your nut. I have heard of fc installed in my area for as low as 100$/sq ft:rolleyes:

you should look for a few gc's that maybe dont build so many houses and are more concerned with quality so you can raise your price

better alternative is to sell your own work imo
Thank you for the responses. Yes this is in Canadian dollars. Yes I will finish this house in 7 days And yes I have my own insurance. I work all by myself with the help of the Solo Sliders and my Power Pole staging. I would just like to know what the going rate for installing Hardi Plank is. My boss keeps telling me that it is the same price as vinyl but I can't figure that out. My 12yrs old son could install vinyl. Hardi is alot more work and should be more money. Not to mention the free soffit and fascia. A friend of mine told me it should be $1.65 SQ FT for siding and $1 per linear foot for soffit and fascia?????
No offence ment by the "12yrs old comment" just a figure of speech. The is alot most to Hardi then vinyl is what I was getting at.
how are the power poles working out for you?
fascia and soffit should not be free. why would you work for free? is this a volunteer job?

When you go to a restaurant do you get your dessert for free?
(if so, i'd like to know where you eat)
I don't know about the going rate but you should get paid for the soffit and facia.
You can figure it by the sq. ft. but I always based my pay on the overhang and facia width including the frieze if there was one. The wider the width, the more the pay.
i dont know its your own buis your own ins but you keep calling the guy your boss?
The Power Poles work great. They save alot of time. They are a little hard to put up by yourself at times if the ground is uneven but I do it.

I refer to him as my Boss because he is the guy I do the work for. Just as some would call the homeowner their boss.

Thanks for the info on the soffit. I can't agree more. Most of these Viceroy's I'm doing have a 1' 4" overhang and the front brow extends to 3'. I'll talk to him about $$$ before I start the next house this week.

Stupid question: Are the power poles synchronized to operate together or do you have to operate them individually like the pump jacks?

Don't know first hand but unless these things are connected through wireless then they are individually cranked up and down.
Umm, erase that... You need to drill to drive these things so no, they do not work simultaneous. If i'm wrong Then WOW technology has surprised me!
I charge per lf of soffit... So much for 16" per foot and so much for 24", There is also an increase in price for doing 4x8 sheets on porches, etc. Soffit is not part of the deal:no:
I use to pay on "average" 125-140 a sq + ln ft for soffit & fasia and per window/door if they set/trim and that included all house wrap flashing and clean up BUT not material.
Soffit and fascia has never been free, and as a general rule Hardie should pay roughly double your vinyl rate. If your vinyl rate is $1 a sq, soffit should be double per lineal foot- $2 a lin. foot up to 2', $4 for 4', $6 for 6' etc.
What you're worth is determined by your rep, the level of your company, and king as always- supply and demand.
I heard him ask for advice not smartassedness. My guess is you have no help or friends.Or just insecure with own ability.Too many years in biz not to know people's lack of ability to learn from others .
