Wht do you guys cary with you day in and day out? I started out with a laptop but that only lasted 6months before it died. Then I went to a folder that fell apart very quickly. Now I am useing a supose to be HD binder that lasted about 3months.
Looking for ideas on what is working for others.

Cell phone and smokes.

I use a Daytimer for most of my stuff--mileage log, receipts, various computer printouts and so forth. Proposals being hand-delivered get a presentation folder. Site-walk notes get scribbled on a cheap spiral bound pad and entered on the computer at the end of the day.

You really have to define the circumstances for any answers to make much sense. I'm in small-job mode these days, with no need for extensive databases or high-end pictorial presentations. If you're into high-end work and/or manage multiple jobs and crews, that's a whole different ball game.

Laptop, paper, pencil/pen, cell phone, calculator...I also take a folder of different printouts.
Blackberry for tasks, to do lists and contacts, legal pad for notes (1 per job), old plastic milk crate in back seat fits hanging files nicely.

When I leave any of the above at home its napkins and the old stand by...back of the hand:rolleyes:

Sounds like you need to renegotiate how you handle your items instead of what you handle.

Same as Framer53,
I carry the 5"x8" size on a small clipboard, all notes about the job get filed with other paperwork at end of job, including shopping lists.
Go to a clients house for a sale I bring my laptop, cell phone, paper and my tape measure. Most of my stuff is cabinet related and I have a program (eCabinet) that I use to make and render views for the client. I can hook my cell phone up to the computer and hook up to the internet to show them my website or to find items on the web. Paper and measure for taking notes.

National Brand Eye-Ease Paper, 5x5 Quadrille Ruled Spiral Notebook, 80 sheets, part #33-209. I have been doing it for years (small break in the early 90's when my boss talked me into a Franklin Planner, which sucked). I keep a jumbo paperclip on the cover, so it can act like a folder until I get back to the office. My pencil fits perfectly in the spiral coil along the binder.

I take that everywhere I go. I might add a job file if needed, but that pad is my memory and journal of what I looked at, key scope points, sketches, etc.

I use my blackberry mainly, although most jobs I label a folder with the client's name on it and carry it in a leather case (mainly for show I type everything in the laptop afterwards).
