I have a client that just bought a 100 year old log cabin. It has a two story addition on the rear of the house that is a laundry room upstairs and equipment room down, including electrical panel box, well pump and hot water heater. They want me to remove the top floor, moving the laundry room down and install a deck on the top. How do I build a roof that will keep the lower room dry and support the weight of the deck?

Unless I am missing something, a roof like what you describe would be a flat roof. Larger support lumber underneath the roof deck. Install a low pitch roofing material. You could then put roof pavers over the membrane. Maybe allow for a parapet type of wall around the perimeter.

You will need an Engineer & perhaps other professional services.

Although a fairly simple straightforward project there is a great deal of liability involved.
