A blight, it started in the early 1900's, chestnuts don't do very well at all if they grow now. Pretty much non-existant.I don't know anything about chestnut. Except that you are telling me the end grain of chestnut looks a lot like white oak.
Did chestnut suffer a plague like elm did?
