Would Ash do this?

I have a few boards that did this, seems because it was more wormy than the rest?

 

That one is flat sawn, and gawd knows
what insults it has suffered in 120 yrs.????

Chestnut, poplar,walnut, butternut,
red oak, white oak, elm,ash, beech,
catalpa, locust,hickory,...........

 

Looks like oak from here, too. I've been lucky enough to work with some of the old stuff, and it has a nice aroma, but nothing like the new oak...

Have you asked over at Woodworking Talk? Some of those guys are pretty keen.

 

My vote is for white oak. My dad would say "oh that's some old German Pine"

what about heart pine? seeing as your house is 'that' old the tight growth rings may fit the picture. If it's been gouged over the years (furniture, dog nails, etc...) consider it a softwood...so is it a softwood or hardwood?

He's right... It's heart pine. And yes, it flakes exactly like Warners last picture when left unfinished for a long time.

It was used a lot here on Long Island in the old homes, I have it in my own. It's a pain in the ass sanding off 75 years of neglect, but looks great when refinished.

 

The little pores look oak like...

I would try to run a scew throught it, oak always splits on me if I try to screw it.

Then cut a few pieces and snort the saw dust and see how much it irritates your nostrels.:laughing:

 

I really, really think it is some American Chestnut.

I have a partial floor joist that smelled the same as this piece when I cut it.

I am certain it is not Oak.

I should go clean up one side of those old floor joists and see what it looks like.

interesting read about the hardness scale at http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/ heart pine is close in hardness to white oak. no listing for chestnut though, but douglas fir and pine are half or less than half of the hardness. may be a way to rule out DF from your hit list.

I'm comparing your floor from post #25(sanded) to mine and they look identical.. Also the flakey board is exactly like mine...

 

i got the same floor in my 1920ish craftsman cape...
it's very soft, figured it for pine...

 

Y'know... you mentioned Elm grows a lot out there.. It has a similar grain... I used some to build a table once, and remember the similarity to pine (and alder and maple, etc)

 

Alex- you are right about the flakey board. That has happened to only 4 boards in the house. One thing, I have no knots either.

This actually kind of fun, I should go take a picture of a door I have from 1860 and let you guys try to figure out what it is.

I would call it ash to anyone that knew anything. But at a cocktail party with general civilians, I might refer to it as chestnut. It has a more exotic ring to it.
