Occidental Leather vs. Occidental Nylon

So I've been looking the past several weeks ad Occy pouches and I've set aside the money to purchase one. I currently have a 3 year old AWP nylon pouch that is on it's last leg. A co-worker has an Occy leather and loves it.

I intend to use suspenders with the pouch and likely go beltless in a year or less. If you go beltless, do you have any issues with the pouches not staying at your side, especially when climbing off a ladder to a new surface?

Occy Nylon pouch owners, how well do they hold up?

Leather and Nylon pouch owners, which do you prefer and why?

If you have the adjust-to-fit pouch how easy is it to adjust with the seasons and is there a large overlap on the back where the padded waistline meets up?

Appreciate the help. I'm currently looking at B5080DBLH, wanted to go with the stronghold beltless framer but it doesn't come in a left hand option. The suspend-a-vest just seems like it would be too hot in the summer.

I know I put a lot there but I know many of you use these bags. Thanks

Welcome to CT. Their have been many threads on tool bags you can start by researching some of the older threads.

It boils down to personal preference

Personally I like the oky belt less leather bags.
I think a lot of it comes down to how much time you spend working in the rain. You won't see too many guys with leather bags up in Oregon or Washington.
Oxy hates lefties. All the good chit is only available for righties. My perfect setup would be the green leather adjust to fits but for a southpaw. Even adjust to fits with the regular black leather would be nice. If I go with the adjust to fits, which I would really like to do it is either the nylon bags or the fat lips. The fat lips are sexy, but the bags are huge I think.

Leather is the only type I wear in WA. It's been awhile since I bought a new rig, but I did go thru a few pairs of jeans due to staining. The rain sucks, nylon dries faster but leather always wins IMHO. Had some leather AWP that sucked, Oxy is still the best, even for southpaws, and I'm one of them.

Oxy makes almost all their models in both right and left hand, You wont find the lefty's on the shelf. I bought mine from Amazon.

I have leather oxys that are around five years old. They are heavier than the nylon and the red dye bleeds from sweat or rain. Neither of which really bothered me. The only real complaint I have is that the two pouches that hold my 16d's and8d's have worn holes in the corners. I'm gonna try a make-shift repair tomorrow that a buddy told me about. You take a small bolt and nut and put it right through the corner. Just make sure the stud faces out so it won't hit you in the leg.
I know, I know. I am just grumpy because the 2 I want the most they don't offer to lefties. When you suggest they consider making them, they just point out that they have the belt worn black leather. If I want belt worn, that is what I would order! They aren't very helpful and I have heard of other people saying the same.

I mean, if you have black leather belt worn set and nylon adjust to fit set, why not offer black leather adjust to fit?

I think there is only one store, in Chicago or something that carries the lefty versions. I will have Burns Power Tool order my set for me when I decide which ones I want. The green leather adjust to fits would be PERFECT, they are everything I wanted and nothing I didn't. I am definitely going with Oxy, just need to figure out which ones will be second best for me.

Lonestar,

I use the all leather trim set in my cabinet shop and on site. I love these bags, they're compact but hold what I need in these situations. I have had this set for a few months.

I also have the 7 bag framer set up in green nylon. I have had this set for 10 years and really love it. It's about the same weight as the trimmer set but will hold much more. These bags are very durable, and break in a little quicker than the leather bags, I think.

Either way I think you will be happy.

Buy a set and try them, if they don't work for you sell them and try something different.

Jeff

your right my fat lip bags are too big for anything but framing and siding.

i have the suspendavest and love it for trimwork.. not the best for general carpentry because tools tend to fall out when climbing and bending over.

i also have teh beltless retrofit kit but i hate it.. the bags slide up onto the suspnder straps when bending over... trying to joist in a deck with your pouches up in your armpit sucks
