Hi guys,

Following IRC 2018, do you see any issues with my plans for notching my sill plate as shown in my render? My concern is the size of the notch. This sill plate is at the edge of the foundation. Thanks in advance. FYI we are mostly a design firm but are getting involved very slowly with the construction side. Our first GE project is our own.

I've never had an issue with notching bottom plate. Sometimes we have to cut the plate completely out. We always strapped it if it was big.

With that said it was only needed with slab on grade but for second floors the plumber comes in after framing and drills through the plate.

Make sure you have an anchor bolt within 12” of each end of the notch.

I always run a strap across the notch. Inspectigators have complimented me on it, but I honestly don’t know if I would get tagged if I didn’t.

2x6 exterior walls make that not an issue here in WA state.
I knew a guy in TN who would use a hole saw to cut a snug hole and slide the plate over the pipe.
Then that plate was pinned to the slab and the wall was loose stick-framed.
No sheathing until it was raised, plumbed and braced.
Looked awesome until it was covered with sheetrock.

He had personal standards....I liked that.
